I've got a roadie friend flying in from back East, and he's eager to check out some of this Cali riding I've been talking about. He would've had to mortgage an organ to bring out his ride, so I figured we'd just rent one.

Easier said than done. There seem to be a lot of places that rent mountain bikes, but not road. Any suggestions?

How far south? There are a couple of shops near Stanford that rent road bikes.

Can you post some names. I have a friend who is also looking to rent.

A couple of friends of mine have rented from Bike Conection in the past (corner of Stanford Ave. and El Camino Real). I forget what bikes they got; maybe entry-to-mid-range Giant or Specialized road bikes. The bikes were well maintained and they had no complaints.

The Stanford Campus bike shop says the rent "high-end road bikes". I don't know how good these are.

I'm in Santa Clara, but Palo Alto should work. I know a couple of good rides around there.

Speaking of which, Summit could work too -- maybe I'll haul my out-of-shape but former tri-nazi buddy up Hicks Road just to watch him keel over, or run up Big Basin -> Skyline.

For road, we have a 54 and 58cm Roubaix Expert and a 56cm Trek Madone 6.5 for demo. We are in Santa Clara.
