Can anybody recommend me any roads that are cycling friendly from NYC to Montauk on the south shore of LI.

Lived 7 years on the North Shore so I am intimately familiar with roads there and LIE service roads but completely lack any knowledge of roads on the south side. Would like to plan rides this spring and summer and any recommended road or roads to avoid would help me out alot.

Thanks :thumb:

I think most people start in Babylon at the train station, at least I do since that is were I live.

From there you get on Union Blvd and follow it to the end, which is South Country Road. Up over the bridge and into Sayville. Leave Sayville on Middle Country and off you go.

South Country Road and Middle Country are break offs from Montauk Highway to the south, meaning they keep leaving and returning to Montauk. The farther East you go the easier/safer Montauk becomes, but I still avoid it. Just about any road East of Patchogue and South of Montauk Highway is safe, just look at google maps and plan your route.

If you do the ride after one of the big Montauk Centuries (there are 2) you will have those marks to follow as well. Some years they survive the winter, some years they don't, so they might be there now, I don't know.

Thanks, just the type of answer I was looking for.

Was planning to go on Montauk Highway, I will steer clear and use Union Blvd and finish South Country Road (hopefully it is just as nice as North Country Road).

How are the cycling conditions of Deer Park Avenue? As on the maps it looks like a nice road to access Union Blvd from LIE service roads.

Speaking of the Montauk Century, I'm doing these routes to build up my endurance for 'em as I plan on biking to Mauntauk from NYC.

I'm actually in the same boat - lived on North Shore LI my entire life, last year moved to the south shore. Planning on doing the May 16th century.

Check out mapmyride.com, they have a few listed. Here is a link to one I found - http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/united-states/ny/babylong/696124110436564831
