Recumbent - How not to ride a recumbent

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Yep. I think I fell over the first 4 or 5 times I got on the thing. It gets better.

The one time I tried to ride a SWB recumbent, I nearly broke my neck. That's why when I got bent it was with a trike. (I love my Greenspeed!)

I've given lots of test rides on my V-Rex, and only one of them turned out that way! Most are a bit wobbly at first. They ride to the end of the parking lot, by which time they've figured it out, and the return trip is *much* better.

That must be pretty much what I looked like on my first attempt. It was a similar bike, SWB. I rented it for a solo road trip because I wanted to try one out before committing to a purchase.
The road trip was about 800 km over 10 days, and it took at least the first 2 days to get over the fear and gain some confidence.( I was also pulling a BOB trailer loaded with gear.)
After that trip, I bought an LWB which I rode with complete confidence from the first pedal stroke.

Actually, his fall became predictable the moment he moved his head forward and (probably) began to sit up. IME, the simple action of unweighting the seat back is usually the only pre-cursor needed to create balance problems for the new rider. It may be counter intuitive, but leaning back into the seat with even more weight is generally better when things feel sketchy.

Grass isn't the best surface to learn on. Back in the late 70's there was an early brand on SWB called the hypercycle. A guy showed up at a park and let us try it out- on grass. In my case the result was pretty much like this video. I took me 20 years to give bents another try, this time, thankfully, on pavement.
(although I must admit grass is a bit more forgiving to fall on).

you making him ride on gravel? I have only dumped my USS Slipstream twice, both at super low speeds, and one of which was on gravel (The other my gym shoe lace got wrapped in the pedal).
