"The 33"-Road Bike Racing - $1000, what to buy?

I just started racing last season and moved from a 5 to a 2. I have about a thousand dollars to spend on my next big cycling purchase and can't decide what to get. Should I go for a power meter and start to really get specific with my training, or should I buy some aero-carbon tubulars to race faster (I can get a pair of HED stinger 4's for right at $1000)? I'm still fairly new to the sport, been riding less than two years and only raced last year so any advice would be great. My goals are to become a 1 this season, pretty lofty, but I'm going to work my butt off. Let me know what yall think

i'd say hold onto the cash because whatever elite team you end up on later this year will have pretty good pro / sponsor deals and your $1,000 will go further.

or better yet, whatever you want to buy now might be free later.

You're unlikely to get on a team that will have power meter deals available. I'd pick up the powertap from Psimet now, learn to use it and get to cat 1 that much sooner...

agreed only the highest teams get factory powermeter deals. but even some local teams can get a discount through their team shop deal.

seems the consensus, regardless of deals, is to spend the loot on a power meter, i concur.

Make you faster first, then your bike. You can borrow or rent expensive equipment, but not a better engine.

To put the wait/jump decision in perspective... When I got into engineering school as a freshman, the first thing I did was I went and bough a $200 calculator. Why? I could have waited and bought something better when I further along in classes and had more money, or I could've kept the more basic one I had, but I figured I would end up buying it or something like it eventually and I'd have this calculator for a very long time (13 years later, I am still using it daily) and I should stretch and get the correct tool now so I know how to use it when it counts.

Same with a powermeter. You will end up buying one eventually. And it's a tool you are going to use for a long, long time. Race wheels come and go - your next team will very likely have deals with the next new wheel maker looking to make a splash. Your powertap will be rebuilt over and over into new rims because it is the quintessential training tool for a racing cyclist. You can't go wrong in buying it now. You'll spend this year learning to use it and you'll refine your training over the next couple years to reach closer to your peak potential. The longer you wait before getting the tool, the longer you'll wait to gain the benefits.

I got a powertap at the end of last season. A week after I got it, I wished I had it at the beginning of last season. Buy the powermeter now.
