Southeast - Colonial Willlamsburg Rides/Routes

Going to be vacationing in Colonial Williamsburg from 2/28-3/7 and will be looking to do some training. Can anyone recommend some nice routes or group rides?

RABA (http://www.raba.org/) (Richmond Area Bicyling Association) has some rides/routes on their website. The Heart of Va metric route, which is not on their site right now, is an excellent route starting from the YMCA in Ashland. It would be my pick. If you email them and ask for advice/suggestions they are usually prompt in responding. I'm not that familiar with the Williamsburg area but, I suspect you will need to come to the Richmond area where there is much more cycling activity.

Check out these guys too. Richmond is about an hour away from Williamsburg. If anything, I'd go towards the Hampton Roads Area.

Lot's of riding in that area. Contact the Conte's bike shop in Williamsburg. Their website has routes and rides listed.

haha VA only asks for 2 feet clearance when passing a cyclist with a car. MA has you beat by a whole foot! also they don't seem to have any language suggesting that if the right side of the travel lane is full of debris that you can then take the lane!

I don't remember salt being used much. I once rode down Duke of Gloucester St. when it was a solid sheet of ice edge to edge. Same thing on W&M campus.

I haven't been up there in a long time but the Parkway between Colonial Williamsburg and the Yorktown Battlefields (and the battlefield roads) used to be a decent ride. A bit rough because the parkway is/was coarse aggregate.

Yes they do. Actually "ice melting chemicals" whatever that is.

Are you guys riding your nice bikes outside or winter bikes?

Any bike should do. You are going to southeast VA at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. The snow storms on the east coast were a freak thing, not the norm. The weather is usually mild compared to where you are.

Cool. I'll bring the nice bike down then. Looking forward to it after riding my 40 pound winter bike for the last 3 months. :)

It's a nice enough ride, but as mmmdonuts mentions it is course aggregate still and I'm sure always will be.
