18. Being able to whip a snowball at the car that just cut you off.
I'm somewhat surprised at how quickly we've gotten so close. Maybe it should have been 1000?

16. Exprimenting with homemade studded tires on the local lake.

15 Heat can be removed faster and the air is denser so you can work your muscles much harder for better strength and lactate training.
14 Its wet but your warm (winter here is 30sF-50sF wet, with about a couple weeks of snow and or teens-20s) so you walk in to your destination steaming.
13 It smells cleaner, not dusty, pure smells like woodsmoke or faint diesel exaust(I like it in moderation so what), not a general mish mash of thick nasty air.
12 Most fools are in hiding.
11. The house is full of relatives visiting for the Holidays.

9. Riding through the woods, along a river, across fresh powder in moonlight. NOTHING is better.
8. Passing fair-weather roadies in February and March, because 1) their legs are still creaky; or 2) they have to dismount to get across icy patches your studded tires eat for breakfast.

6. It helps justify the number of bikes you have in the garage (But Honey, I need 2 more bikes set up for winter - the other ones are summer bkes!!!)
¿Por qué un perro lame sus bolas?
5. Because you can.
Does that count as a repeat? I put up 'because I can' - don't know if that's the same thing..
4) Frozen wind on your face is the poor man's cryogenic preservation. The more hours spent outside in winter, the younger you'll look :)

2. Picking frozen snot off your beard or mustache(sp?) and grossing out all the poor people that drive by.

1 1/2. Because studded tires on dry pavement make an intimidating rumbling noise. (this doesn't seem to deserve the number 1 spot)
Edited to renumber from "1 1/2" to 3(a) because it made more sense to me, but then edited back to 1 1/2 because someone else posted a 1 1/4.
1.25 Because it's still part of the riding season. Because the season doesn't end in august. Something like that. Meaningless post...
Who's gonna get the guts together to pull off number one?

Not me. Not worthy, since my winter is like some people's early fall.

7. Because life is more fun when people think you're crazy.
I concur!
Great Responses everyone!! That was fun. Seriously one of the things i enjoy most about Winter cycling is that it is much more of a challenge. Just about anyone can get on a bike and ride in warm weather. It is like taking a nice long warm shower.
Winter riding is more like taking a very LONG COLD SHOWER. There are so many elements to overcome other than just wind, gravity and your own endurance. I also like the solitude it provides. There is often no human contact on most rides,no joggers, no walkers, no cycliststs, fewer dogs. This is a nice change from other seasons.

0.86 That one moment that your ride feels just like a Robert Frost poem.
0.85 You make your turn and look up, wham it hits you, how beautiful the view is, the city decked in white with lights, a full moon hanging on the horizon, the snow sparkling. And knowing you are the only one seeing it at that moment. The universe is good. The moment passes and you still have 3 miles to get home.
0.84 Sometimes the moment lasts the rest of the 3 miles home, and stays with you for the rest of the night.

It gives you that warm feeling inside. I guess they just don't get it.
