Foo - Ever get tired of reading the REALLY long posts? Try this:

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I normally try to read everything that someone takes the time to type in a given thread. Sometimes though, I get impatient and either skim or skip the really really long responses. Ever tried to read the Rivendell Reader... OY VEY!

NO MORE!

Most Mac users are probably aware of the speech funtion. Once set up, all you need to do is highlight the text and hit the appropriate hot keys, then simply sit back and let your computer read it to you!

My favorite voice is "Fred".... not only is it bicycle appropriate but it is the "Stephen Hawking" style computer voice. It cracks me up to hear some of these responses out loud.

Here is how to set it up:
- Go to system preferences
- Select "Speech"
- Select "text to speech"
- Check "speak selected text when the key is pressed"
- set any key or combination of keys you want to use (I use Cmnd + Shift + X)

Geez, people have spelling and grammar issues as it is... what's next? They won't be able to read? (I'm sure this function has been around for a long time, but really, I wouldn't be surprised if we're headed in that direction.)

They won't be able to read?

Fact: On BF, there are many who don't. Whether it's lack of ability is the worrisome part...

I understand your point and even agree... to a point. Are you familiar with the long winded rantings of Grant Peterson? If not.... believe me they go on forever. On occasion I will use the speech function and highlight his entire rant. Then I am free to do anything I want while I listen to his rant. Things like browse craigslist, or clean up the mess around the computer.

There is a certain "fun factor" in this for me. I admit to using the function for the sake of using it. Mac speech has been around for a very very long time, even before OSX. I am sure Apple had a better reason for adding the function, I just use it for my own entertainment.

Try it with "Bad News." If nothing else, it'll at least be interesting... :P

I do have a Windows partition on my Mac.... but I don't use it. Not a windows slam, bur I am not as familiar with it and do not know how to use the speech function.

I usually read the 1st and last 2 sentences. If I can't figure out what goes between them, I'll consider reading the rest of the post.
