The bike with Centaur is about $1,900ish..they are doing the same thing they've always done...put together several bikes with different price points with the best frame and used the components to vary the price. It is an outstanding marketing strategy and basically blows away, for example, the 2000 series Treks for about the same pricing....why ride ZR9000 when you can ride a Tour frame?
This year's six 13 centaur was about 3k us, are you serious that they come as low as 2k, do you have a link?

Mirror??
I was on their site last night checking out the six13's. I'm so frustrated with my creaking Specialized I'm considering returning it and going C'dale. I don't know why I didn't buy the C'dale in the first place.

Yeah ... couldn't help but slobber over that R1000 myself. Bought an F35 at the beginning of the year, so slobber is all I'm gonna do for the next 3-5 years :o

What exactly are compact cranks and what is the benefit.

And just when I thought my R3000Si was nice. Sigh. The ol' wallet just can't keep up with the times.

I've just noticed that these are the european versions of the bikes - the us versions can be found at:

Compact cranks, as their name suggests, are compact versions of their larger 2-ring brothers. A standard double may be 53/39. A compact crank will be something like 50/36. What this does is allow you to have relatively the same gearing on a double with an 11-21/23 cassette in back as a tripple would have. It gives you a considerably wider gear range on a double than a standard 53/39 setup. The benefit is that you can still have the nice close-ratio shifting of a double but enjoy almost the same gearing ratios as a tripple. The downside is that for flat areas and downhills, you can run out of gears compared to a standard double. Some pros have even used compact cranks in the very mountainous stages of various races.

Interesting that C'dale is putting Fitzik Aliante saddles on many of their new road bikes (well, interesting to me b/c I just ordered one for my 2002 4000!) Not a cheap saddle but very good reviews...
I wonder how the aluminum/carbon mixture will stand the test of time??
I actually like my 2003 R3000 Optimo more than the new ones. I'm surprized they drop the Durace and replaced with Ultegra. Oh well I'm happy cuz it broke in now.

I use the Ritchey compact road crank with a 53 38 and an 12 23 in the rear and this is pretty good for moderate hills. The steep stuff, I put on my 12 - 26.
Saw one on Saturday at my LBS! It was a full Dura Ace model. Absolute beauty! This one, interesting enough, looked like it had been ridden pretty hard. The two guys at the shop didn't know much about it.

Yeah, I was drooling over that yesterday. The LBS had a six13 with campy centaur, and an '05 R1000! The 1000 was black, with CAAD8 frame, 10 speed Ultegra and outside crank bearings. Looking at the specs the 5000 is only different by Dura-Ace and a few minor details. All this for $1999, I was in lust. That would make a nice roomate for my Lemond!!
