Folding Bikes - Removable Pedals- Ezy vs Ezy Superior

Hello Everyone,

I want to buy a set of Removable pedals and am trying to decide between the Ezy and Ezy Superior line of pedals.

I understand that the Superior line of pedals has a very secure locking mechanism while the standard Ezy have been know to prematurely release. Not for everyone but for some.

I would appreciate your experience with either pedals. In particular, in what conditions to the standard ezy pedals release?

The Ezy are known (to me) to come off only when I don't secure them with the plastic clips.

If you don't have already Ezy pedals and if you don't plan to go clipless (not yet available for Ezy Superior), I would say, go with the Superior because they are easier to remove and put on.

(I have both regular and clipless EZ, no experience with Superior).

Regarding the superior, the retention system is very secure and reliable. I have them on my Bike Friday Pocket Llama and have used them for mountain biking, and the removable design makes them very convenient for packing the bike into a suitcase, as the crank chucks are small enough that they do not need to be removed.

Are the clips difficult to use?

The superiors must be rugged if you use them Mountain Biking. Great to hear!

I would not say that it is 'difficult' but it is a nuisance. The clips are seated inside small recess and you need to push their ends with two fingers. Not a good design IMO. It is inconvenient but not a big deal in the grand scheme of setting up my bike and myself for a ride.

BTW, Thor's pedal page shows also the old style clips (black) that have little extra 'handles' at their end. I wonder if those clips were easier to remove (never seen one in person, I have only the yellow ones).

I would not trust them with clipless w/o clip,maybe with standard. I own clipness and standard.

I own Wellgo quick release pedals because they are easier to use than Ezy (no clip) and lighter/cheaper than Ezy Superior. Just go to Ebay and search for "Wellgo quick release" and "Xpedo quick release" (Xpedo is Wellgo's upmarket line), and you should be able to find several models and colors to choose from. bhkyte: As far as I know, these pedals are of standard 9/16" threading. Compatibility shouldn't be an issue. As for clipless pedals, there are many quick release models on Wellgo's website (look for the small RD icon):

The problem is that I haven't seen any Ebay sellers offer these. You may have to go to Asia to obtain a pair!

There is a guy, Steveroot, on the Dahon website forum who has pedaled thousands of miles on the standard ezy pedals without using the clips and without accidental pedal releases. He commutes year round in Chicago weather which is very tough service for a pedal. He says that if you check to make sure that the pedal is inserted and latched properly you do not need the clips. He has had only one unscheduled pedal release and that occurred because one of the latches that screws into the crank arm had developed a fatigue crack and fell apart after many thousands of miles of use. He has trouble with road salt and winter grit damaging his pedals so he has two sets that he uses alternately, riding one set while he refurbishes the other. He's got over 10k miles on one set and a few k on the other. I think his schedule is to ride one set for a year and then refurbish it as necessary and as he finds the time during its off year. I don't think he does an extraordinary amount of work on the pedal in other words, he just tends to be more aggressive about all kinds of bicycle maintenance than many of us because of the hard use his Dahon gets.

I really would not recomend using them without for clipness pedals. As for standard pedles ,at your own risk,and depending on batch/age/sytle might be OK................

Oooooo they come in orange! I don't really need new pedals, but I want the shiny orange aluminum pedals anyways.

Oops I spoke too fast. Actually there are Wellgo quick release clipless pedals for sell on Ebay. Although they are not compatible with MKS cleats, you can use Shimano SH-51 cleats with them (in addition to Wellgo's own 89A cleats).

Just adding that MKS cleats are compatable with spd pedals.But SPD are not compactable with MKS. So just change your cleats to MKS and they work from my expereince. I run spd and MKS with the same shoes.

BTW, I never had an issue with the EZ connectors when using the plastic clip and am very happy with them in general though probably would go with Superior if a clipless would be available.

Seems to me a preemptive pedal end insert of steel,
they are made to repair stripped pedal threads,
will let you , a virtually unlimited number of times
unscrew, and re install the pedals you actually prefer ,
whether made by Mks or Welgo, Or not.

I had the same thought, but it still wouldn't be as quick as a "quick release" pedal. I suspect that most Wellgo pedals use the same spindle dimensions, so it may be better to simply put quick release spindles in any of Wellgo's 100+ designs.

Besides, what's wrong with the Wellgo/Xpedo QRD pedals on ebay? They got "mountain" clipless, "road" clipless, traditional cages, bear trap cages, light cnced platforms, platforms with pins (with and without built in reflectors), tiny platforms...what more could you want?

I use Japanese-made MKS pedals which seem similar to the Ezy pedals. MKS offers 3 different types of this pedal; a flat pedal, a rat-trap, and an SPD version. MKS makes the NJS approved track racing pedals, so the quality of their products is very high (I won't buy anything made in China). These pedals also use plastic retaining clips, but I never bother to use them, and I have yet to have a pedal pop out on it's own.

I use MKS MT E EZYs on three of my bikes and MKS Esprit Superiors on my fourth. Never had an unplanned pedal release while riding. Did have one fail while riding though. Same thing that happened to Steveroot and, coincidentally, on my Dahon. The portion of the socket that threads into the crank end fractured. The local distributor was nice enough to replace the pair with MKS Esprit Superiors which I have to say I do prefer. They provide a larger platform for my huge feet and not having to mess with the plastic clips is a nice bonus.
