Are they the same as a Rotorcrank? A while ago they started quite a debate:

No not at all. Basically in a nutshell in powercranks each individual crank is allowed to move seperately and is not locked together 180 degrees apart in a unit.

pezcycling give good review to anything and everything.
not that i'm one to question their editorial independance.
[but powercranks do sound like a good way to train. or atleast grow the thighs of a mutant]

I've tested out the powercranks. They are expensive as hell, but I definitely see the validity of using them. However, you can get similar results using ankle weights and doing one legged, isolated cycling training techniques.
I did read a study by independent physiologists on Pub Med recently that said that a group of athletes they tested that used the Powercranks actually increased their VO2 max. They did admit it was a pretty basic study that needed more investigation, however. If true, I could definitely see the potential for the use of Powercranks. If I could increase my VO2 efficiency, I'd be on that like a cheap suit.... or rather, an expensive one, since these cranks are costly.
When I spoke to the the Powercranks reps, they did say that the Powercranks would work to strengthen the hip flexors, which would result in a rounder pedal stroke, increased efficiency, and increased speed. If I had the money to throw away, I would consider it.
They did show a triathlete (can't remember his name) who'd won a major race using the powercranks. They dog and ponied him out and he talked about how the powercranks increased his efficiency, made him faster on the bike, blah, blah, blah.
I am thinking about going for it. But then again, I'm going for my coaching license from USA Cycling, so for me, I could see the usefulness in training my clients. Between the rollers, the Power meter on the Polar, the trainer, and the weights, I think I would have a pretty well rounded containment field to train my clients, but adding in the powercranks would just be additional gravy for them.
