Foo - Firefox crashing.......

For the past few weeks Firefox seems to crash on a daily basis. I have removed and reinstalled it several times to no avail.

:crash: And yes, I am running the latest version. :crash:

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

"There’s a number of reasons for Firefox 3 crashing, which could include any of these, or be something else:

Incompatible or Buggy Extensions
Buggy Plugins
Upgrading an Old 2.x Profile to 3.0 (using a fresh profile works best)
Spyware/Viruses
Compatibility Problems with XP
Video Card Drivers (Make sure you are not using old drivers)
Tablet PC Incompatibility
Sneezing loudly
You’ll have to read through the article and go through the steps that might apply to you… the last, and potentially best, option is to completely uninstall Firefox and remove all your profile folders, and then install it again, which we’ve covered below.

Run in Safe Mode

One of the first troubleshooting steps you can do is to run Firefox in Safe Mode, which will run without add-ons or extensions. Just look in your start menu, and you’ll see an item for it:



or alternatively, from the command line:

firefox.exe -safe-mode

If Firefox no longer crashes while running in Safe Mode, then you know you have an issue with one of the following:

Plugins
Extensions
Settings
Profile
If safe mode does not solve your issue, then you should try to use compatibility mode (mentioned below), and do the uninstall completely and reinstall method. You should also check the “Other Known Issues” section below.

Create a New Profile (if Safe Mode Fixes Your Issue)

Open up a command prompt, or simply type in the full path to firefox.exe, and add on the -profilemanager switch at the end to launch the Firefox “Choose User Profile” screen, where you can create a new profile or switch to a different one.

firefox.exe -profilemanager



Creating a new profile will give you a “blank slate”, where you might have less issues. You can export your bookmarks from the current profile and then import them into the new profile (covered below).

Note: This method usually solves any problems caused by upgrading an old profile to a new one.

Disable Unnecessary Plugins

One of the quickest ways to crash Firefox (or any browser) is to run with a plugin that is causing problems. Open up Tools \ Add-ons, and then go to the Plugins tab, and disable anything you don’t actually use.



For troubleshooting purposes, you could just disable all of them… this is especially helpful when Safe Mode fixes the issue. If Firefox works fine after disabling all the Plugins, then you can enable them one by one until you figure out which one caused the errors.

Note: For me, disabling Silverlight fixed a lot of the crashing issues.

Disable Unnecessary Extensions

In the same screen as above, you can also disable extensions. If running in Safe mode keeps you from crashing, you should go through and disable all your extensions, and then enable them one at a time until you find the one causing the problem."

Wow. Thanks for the extensive reply. I will give those things a shot and hope for some improvements.

I use FF with XP and have had no problems.

I can't stand the instability of firefox. I'm trying out Google Chrome, now.

One thing you'll notice about using Google Chrome when viewing BF- the embedded videos will not play. At least they don't for me, anyway. I'm probably doing something wrong, though. If I want to see one of those video's, I launch either FF or IE, and then the vid's play just fine.

Google Chrome works ok for me....

And Firefox works fine for me...

Chrome is awesome. Check out the incognito function for "planning birthday parties" or other things you want to keep secret.

What's with Chrome randomly turning tabs into new windows? Very annoying.

I can guarantee you that they do. Hell, they do it with gmail as well. It's convenient as hell, though, sometimes. Often, their targeted ads are for something on sale that I need to buy, then! :p

I posted in a thread once about some Ohio State vs ? game. After submitting my reply, I popped back to the index page, and every ad had something to do with OHIO.

Microsoft's Silverlight is a "usual suspect".
Google's Chrome is RAM Pig, one that's a wee bit too intrusive for my liking..

Opera is a pretty zippy browser as well.

That's regular google spying. Your browser has cookies that google sets and reads so it can display ads. The cookies are not browser specific and can be done with any browser.

Great answers. I have been using Firefox for several years with no problems until recently.

Chrome is really nice. I found it to be much quicker than FF at starting up and loading pages. I have been pleased since I switched at the start of the year.

I'm running the same, and it's been a problem. Seems to have been doing better since I ran disc clean-up.

I just downloaded Opera and it has already crashed so I may have an OS problem, and not just a browser problem.

Opera does look pretty good but I am unable to organize my 'Favorites' so I may not keep it.

As for the OS; I built the box 5 or 6 years ago so it may be time for a new computer since don't relish reloading XP.

I may try Chrome next to see if that has issues.

It has a " Speed dial " Feature. look it up. itz SWEEET

I use both Opera and FF. Imo, FF is WAY better it also has many useful add-ons too, including 'cookieSafe' and 'BetterPrivacy'. Although, 'Crap Cleaner' takes care of LSO's too.
Alot of stuff is not compatible with Opera
I have never had a problem with FF crashing.

It is strange...after long use of FF and TBird just recently (within the past month or so), both seem to be stumbling a bit. FF will crash, pop up it's little "whoops" window, then reboot itself and recover. TBird will be fine, then I'll go to compose a message, but when I hit send it will stall. I can save the message, close it out, and reopen and send the message out of drafts right away.

I haven't had XP for a while. Lately, I have been using W7 and I am really liking it :)

I learned about a year ago that my problems with FF and IE were not faults of the browser, but of Acrobat Reader. I've since uninstalled and switched to FoxIt reader and haven't worried about my browser since. http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/reader/
