OK folks, here's the rub.

I've been stubbornly sitting on the same weight for quite a few months now. A little bit of fluctuation, but basically still the same. This has been a bit annoying.

I admit that I am not on any particular diet or diet discipline - I eat a balanced and healthy array of food, and I eat what I want. I'm sure that if I got really strict with myself I could get below 200lb/90kg, but that's either not in my nature or just plain not fun. I'm already on a beer-ban until March for a sporting competition, why punish myself?

However, I realised on Sunday that there is much more to it than just the big blinking digital number on the scale.

On my morning ride, I dusted one of my regular riding partners. While he was struggling a bit, I felt strong and in control on each climb. I even had a couple of spare gears while he was up out of the saddle trying to keep up. He turned for home early, but I kept on going to ride The Peak.

The Peak is the famous tall spot on Hong Kong Island. It's about 550m/1880ft. I first rode up it about 18 months ago and was so happy about it that I took a photo. Now I go up it twice on Tuesday mornings before work.

The icing on the cake came at lunch time after the ride. My wife and I were off to a birthday lunch at the restaurant at our sporting club, so I dressed up in one of the outfits she had made me buy before our December holiday in Italy (she said that in Italy I had to look good, even if we were tourists!). I was wearing some nice trousers, a slim fitting and well pressed shirt, and a well tailored 3/4 length cashmere overcoat. So, I'm looking good enough for my wife to be seen in public with me, then at lunch I get no less than three of the other women (married and single!:D) commenting about how good I looked, how fit, how well dressed.

Screw the scales! I feel good today!

I'm not sure which bit feels better...looking good, or being hit on by single women!

You don't mention height. 200 lbs at 4'9 would not be good!:D.......When I try to lose weight, it's only in preparation for an event. I actually don't care to look good for the women, it's nothing but trouble!:D Last time I had 3 different women say unmentionable things to me, I felt so violated!:p....ok, so what if one of them is my wife, still counts!:D

Beanz, I'm just on 6' tall. With my general build I'd be good to go at anything between 185 and 200. I'd be happy to be about 88kg (about 195). When I was rowing racing men's pairs at a pretty high level I was about 185 (late 20s early 30s) with about 8 serious training sessions a week. At least I'm down from the 220 I was at a couple of years ago.

My wife can say unmentionable things to me and violate me all she wants . However the 6' tall, curvy, long auburn haired girl at lunch could take a turn too...:innocent:

BOTH! They both feel equally good, as long as wifee understands. It's wreaked havoc at home a time or two for me, though, when the wife feels particularly insecure that day. All of a sudden, it's all my fault, just for losing all the weight. ;) It was just a plot by me to look good for single women and not an effort to live longer.
I'm not sure which bit feels better...looking good, or being hit on by single women!

Must you choose?

Must you choose?

I dunno. It would be nice to have it all (and I was just about to type something that WOULD get me into trouble!).

Weight is a useful yardstick, but once you've dropped below really worrying weights, I think plateaus and whatnot are normal, and looking at measurements (both body measurements and fitness measurements) can be very useful. I know I've been plateaued for a while now, I was 207 in May, I'm 204 now. I bobbed up to 215 at one point even, but since May people are still noticing that I have lost mass around the midsection, and I'm noticing that 220-250 mile weeks aren't killers right now. Part of the latter is that I live in Illinois now, and no mountains = no effort. But, part of it is really increasing fitness. More than anything else, increasing fitness keeps me motivated when the scale just sits there refusing to play nice.

I got another compliment tonight from one of my rowers who has been out of town for a few months!

OK, its a 120kg rower called Mike, but you gotta take the compliments when and where you get them!
