Hi everyone. Long time lurker, first time poster.

I've been an avid cyclist since my early teens, riding an aluminum Raleigh Technium 440 since the late 80's. I've since outgrown that bike, and decided it was time for a new one.

I found a LBS that specializes in road bikes, had a fitting, tried a few bikes and fell in love with one - a 2003 Lemond Maillot Jaune. It has full Ultegra (except for the brakes) and a Shimano R540 wheelset. I paid $1499.

Did I get a good deal? From the reasearch I've done on the Maillot Jaunes, I thought they came with Dura Ace components and a Bont wheelset in 2003. Did I pay too much for lesser components? I know the frame is the most important consideration in a bike purchase, since everything else can be upgraded.

I cannot believe how smooth this bike is. Now I see why "Steel is Real".

Just looking for a little piece of mind, I guess.

Thanks in advance for your responses.

Ahhh - another opportunity to write about one of my beloved Lemonds. Apologies in advance to those who are tired of hearing it.

Yes, you got a good deal IMO. Granted, the factory built MJ does come with DA and Race Lites, it is also sold as a frameset. The Zurich is the exact same frame with different paint and badging, and comes with Ultegra from the factory.

I have a '98 that I built earlier this year with a frame I purchased that had never been ridden and was sitting in a garage. I built it up with full Ultegra, Neuvation M28 Aero wheels, Ritchey bars, stem and seatpost and various other bits. Although I did it "on the cheap", I am very happy with the outcome and would compare it to bikes costing a lot more.

Good luck and enjoy.
