Triathlon - I am going to do a triathlon!!!!! (but I need help)

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

you have plenty of time to train and are able to take it slow, i was borderline Homer Simpson and I'm doing it, and I didn't have near the time you've got to train.
Read the stuff above, take it slow, and enjoy. I know I have and I've lost almost 20+ pounds in 6 weeks.
Go check out some training plans at beginnertriathlete.com. I think there's a "couch-to-sprint" plan that might suit you well...

I am training for my first Triathlon as well! :) Yes, yes, yes, you have enough time if you really want it. I am training for mine in about the same time frame. What I did was start with the hardest thing first. For me, it was running. Then a month later I added swimming, and a couple of weeks later biking. I joined a gym with a pool. Now I go 3-4 times a week. On those days I walk/run 30 minutes, bike 30 minutes on a stationary bike, and I swim 30 minutes. If I can do this, you can! I'm certainly not concentrating on winning the Triathlon...on this one I just want to finish. I already feel accomplished doing three sports that I would have never done without the training. It is a great feeling!

This doesn't sound like an appropriate goal. Sorry. You know what a triathlon is right?

Your Goal for the first Tri would be just to finish.

well that kind of depends on which triathlon. a sprint, yes, an Ironman, absolutely not. You should be able to finish a sprint by june

In 6 months I lost 30kg and trained for my 1st sprint try, just comes down to how determined you are! Certainly achievable in that time, join a local tri club and/or find a mentor, mine started out a little over weight and in three years Competed at kona. Go hard!

Thanks for all the good advice . I am sure I would be ready. It is a small one . Swimming 3000 m, 9 mile ride, and 5 k run.

It could certainly be possible. I recommend this book a lot, it's called Triathlon Training in 4 Hours a Week by Eric Haar. The name may be a tad misleading, but what I appreciate most about it is how accessible it makes that first event. It will guide you through a simple fitness evaluation (from couch potato up), and then suggest some very basic, fitness appropriate training plans. The longest one runs about 8 weeks. You can get it on Amazon, and used it's pretty cheap, around $4 I think. We very breifly review the book on our site. We don't sell it, or receive any benefit from recommending it - I've read it though and watched others use it successfully. You might also check out some of our beginner tips. Triathlon is a fantastic sport, get ready for a wild ride!
