I am absolutely amazed at how over priced the bikes are on CL.
Just ridiculous.

The used bike market has changed in the last few years. Used bikes prices have gone up- and they are selling. I sold a 70s vintage Centurion entry level bike for $180.00 that 3-4 years ago wouldn't have fetched $50.00. Had a lot of interest in it. For the amount of work and parts that I put into it, it wasn't overpriced. It is a better bike than anything new near that price.

If you go new, look at the KHS Flite 100 or the Mercier (same bike) from Bikesdirect.com.

It's almost chaper to get them brand new at shops. Last yr entry level models are between 450- 500. It's ridiculous seeing pistas for 700 (and higer) at CL.

Most sellers seem to be in a feeding frenzy at this particular time of year. I've noticed prices for terrible bikes listing at $150 and decent bikes for $300. The season is opening up and newbie listers look around at what's listed and then add $20 and list their walmart or 1979 sears. Everyone keeps adding $20 for no reason and soon everything is listed way high.

My biggest gripe is that a decent quality bike lists at prices that a fully rebuilt fully repacked and lubed and CLEAN version should sell for. You go see it and it needs absolutely everything...

I was very surprised with the 'junk' that some people feel are 'treasures' on CraigsList....I have a 'mint condition', and I mean mint.....paint glistens, aluminum glistens, no rust, no dents, everything works like new. It is a 1975 Italvega Super Light, with custom drilled brake levers, calipers, chainwheels and crank arm spider, and bottom bracket shell.....this bike is a work of art, and there is not another one like it in the world. Original owner with less than 500 miles on it....let me know if you are interested. Not a big name like Masi or Colnago, but every bit as exquisite. All factory work....bike sold for over $1,200 in 1975....I understand I can't sell itfor what it was purchased, but I also don't want it in the hands of someone who can't appreciate it too.

Budget Bikes has the KHS 100 for 599. Saw it yesterday. Seems like a good deal for an entry level track bike.

Craigslist bikes can kiss my ass. Overpriced garbage.

my pedal stripped the threading on the crank, and it came loose on the warmup lap. good thing it did, otherwise i would've been spinnin one legged mid race.

KHS is surprisingly light, but the components are crap. One benefit to buying used is they often replace ****ty cranks on bikes. 600 is the same budget i'm working with, and there is stuff out there. I just don't have a car to get to most places.

Go to your LBS - they'll do great deals for you in today's climate. These deals with kick CL's collective rear-end with the time saved, LBS goodwill, and quality product that you can return if there are any problems.

I've found (fortunately) that in today's crazy economic climate with high gas prices, ironically, as CL prices have gone stratospheric, LBS prices have gone down as they try and offer deal after deal to get you to bike a bike. After all, the bike is just the start of a potentially profitable relationship for them, and as of late, LBS bikes in the <$1000 range are killer deals. Not so much for topend racing bikes, but still good deals to be had.

just picked up a cannondale capo for 500 in good condition on cl. saved 450

VeloSwapMeet at San Diego Velodrome in April. Get there early; the track bikes are the first to sell every time.
