Foo - For those working in schools

How you memorize all those names? I think there are over 500 kids in my children school and yet, when I go to the office, the lady there always greet me by my name AND last name and asks if I'm there for <my-girl's-name> or for <my-boy's-name>. It's amazing.

They have facial recognition software. They are scanning you as you approach the door. The system then feeds your data, your kids names, your SSN, your BF username and other stuff like if you ever voted for the communist party in the 50's to the receptionist. Either that or she is a psychic witch. You should see if she weighs more than a duck.

It means you or your kids are visiting the office too often. Same thing with criminals; it's not good to be known by the authorities. Are your kids breaking their legs or selling drugs every other week?

I know the students who visit my office often. The students who take care of business and then just go to class on time, all the time? I don't know who they are.

Some people are just like that. The director of Res Life at my college took attendance in a 100 person class the first day by staring up at the room for 90 seconds. It turns out he had memorized the ID photos that were taken less than a week prior. If you give him the name of a student that went there 10 years ago he'll tell you what rooms s/he lived in, what classes and interests they had, who the room mates were, where they work now, etc. ~500 people per freshman class.

I work with a list of nearly 200-ever changing people in my job and I'm required to not only know their names but also what's been going on in their life. I think it's easier than it may seem. You just have to do it.

heh - I have 1200 students taking the courses with our projects in it and many of them will be hitting my desk throughout the semester, however there are students who - hmmm semester started @4 weeks ago - who have been in my office 5 or more times. Those names/faces - I get to know very easily. :)

But the receptionist knew our names long before Pinky... I'm gonna have to investigate further.

So thats why they forget everything else.

It's part of our job. We need to learn the names of the kids that are in our school/classroom all day. I had all 120 names of my students by the end of the first week of school.

Y'all are waaay underpaid. I'm doing my best to pay y'all what's due, but those damn politicians find a way to divert the funds...

I have trouble remembering my own kids' names sometimes, too. My brain shuts down at the end of the day. :lol:

I just look at as kid and yell out a name and expect them to answer. Works most of the time.

All kidding aside, there's only 150 kids in our high school. You learn most of their names pretty easily.

Witch, fah! hehe - it's quite unbelievable where I work - (community college) some students get it - it's college; while others OMG - it's hand holding what they want - read it for them, etc. Some make it through the first, er, second or even third semester and then it sets in ... others not so much. But I must say it's good to see success stories from the students who have issues and have a hard time and they make it through - it's just a little harder on us as guidance, but like I said - it's good to see success.

I've been teaching 150 students a year in high school for the last 24 years. Sometimes I have trouble just remembering the names of the students I have at any given time.

For students who have graduated, it always helps to recall their names when I see them if they're working for a service company and are wearing a company jacket with a nametag: Bob, Jose, Shaniqua.

Today I ran into a student who graduated last June. He was wearing a company jacket with his name. "Hey, Mike," I said, "how are you doing? You working for [company name] now?"

"Nah, they fired me. I just kept the jacket."

His next career stop: the United States Air Force.
