Bicycle Mechanics - Disbonded pedal insert

Hello,

I just purchased a neused road bike and it has FSA carbon cranks, there were no pedals on the bike when I bought it but when I got home and put the pedals on, it appears the pedal insert is disbonded. Is this repairable or not worth it? or is FSA a decent company and they might fix it? I dont have a receipt and the guy I bought the bike from doesnt have a receipt either.
Please give me some advice!

Is the insert just loose in the crankarm? Or is it so loose that it falls out?

Personally I would return it to the seller and get my money back. Who knows how many other parts on that bike are damaged and will need to be replaced. The cost will add up quickly to the point where it would've been cheaper for you to just buy a brand-new bike.

it wouldnt hurt to contact FSA to see if they can do anything to help you out. If FSA can't do anything then you might be able to use some type of epoxy to repair the pedal insert.

I'd try to avoid having to fix it if at all possible, but if you're stuck with it then yeah, do some research into the different types of epoxies.

I would exhaust repair options from FSA themselves before attempting hack DIY fixes.

You might be able to mechanically remove the play by installing a large (14mm) washer between the pedal and the crank arm. I wish I could source a Titanium washer for this purpose. Warranty is only 2 years, so good luck.

I would like to hear less cludgy solutions to this problem which affects a lot of carbon cranks. Would it be possible to drill a small hole through the edge of the crank to the insert and inject glue around the insert? Can the crank be heated (450F) and then pressed/squeezed around the insert to re-bond?

Have any of the carbon repair shops (Calfee, Ruckus, etc.) sorted out a repair? Grind the carbon down to the top of the insert and then rebond with a carbon patch?

This problem affects FSA K-force and Campagnolo Record UT cranks.

Didn't we answer a similar issue to this last week with frame damage!

Go back to the seller an get a refund, if you can't, buy a replacement crank.

Doubt it would be worth repairing vs replacement cost, and FSA should say no to any warranty request's as you are not the origianal purchaser.

Would suggest in future when purchasing 2nd hand, to make sure what you get works before paying.

Not sure why you think this might work but since you do - FSA actually did make pedal washers as per your description and they were provided with their carbon cranksets. Obviously that didn`t solve everyone`s issues.

But you can contact them anyway. Ask for `pedal washers`. That`ll be stamped right across the washers.

What does this mean? If it's a new bike from a store, then, yes, take it back. If it's a used bike from some guy, then I doubt the OP can take it back; like the private sale of most used things, it's "as-is."

Interesting. I'd never heard that term before either. I guess what we used to call such things is "like new".

just go buy a new crankset & bb, and replace it , chalk it up to 'some bargains
are not as expected'.

might have had rough handling when 'it fell off the Truck'..
