Bicycle Mechanics - Dura ace wheel, hub and spokes. I need to change the hub.

A quick recap. I have a pair of Dura Ace 7800 2006 wheels. 10 speed.
As a Junior, i need to run a 14+ cassette. However, the freewheel on this wheel will only accept dura ace cassettes. But, dura ace do not make 14+ cassettes. As i cannot change the freehub to enable me to run an ultegra 14+ cassette, i have been told i need to either buy a new rear wheel, or change the whole hub!!! tell me about it, im pissed of.

So i was wondering, If i purchase this hub http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=330406877727&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT would i be able to rebuilt my 20 whole dura ace rim with the current spokes with that hub?? If not, what type of spokes do i need in order to fit the hub and rim.

Just to clarify, the DA wheels i have are not the deep sections and are not the carbon effect ones. Just alluminium.

Any help you can give would be SOO HELPFUL!!!

if you want to use that ritchey hub then you'll probably need new spokes because your dura ace hub is probably going to have different dimensions than that ritchey hub.

to use your current rims/spokes you'll need to find a hub with the same dimensions as your dura ace hub. so you'll need to measure your hub and find out what the dimensions are http://lenni.info/edd/howtomeasure.

using this site http://lenni.info/edd/, i just compared a dura ace 7800 hub with an ultegra 6500 and they both had the same dimensions. so you might want to look into buying a ultegra hub.

I could be mistaken on this, but i think all Shimano 10 speed cassettes have the deep splines, so you should be good with ultegra after all.

Waste of time and money, and it probably won't make a great wheel. The DA wheels use straight-pull spokes. You could only salvage the rim most likely.

If you're stuck on using that wheel, get the Mavic M10 cassette (kit no 4) as I mentioned in the other thread.

BTW, your freehub will accept any Shimano 10 cassettes (other than junior gearing).

You can always change to a 48 in front, if you have a 13T top cog. Here's a paper from USA Cycling about gear restriction:

Keep in mind it's not about the specific gear combination you have, but about the overall rollout of your bike. Tires affect it as well.

zzyzx_xyzzy: Ultegra junior gear cassettes (14t top) won't fit on deep splines, they're shallow.

edit: rydaddy: I don't think those M10 cassettes work on deep spline hubs...

Ultegra junior cassettes use the shallow 9 speed splines.

You could be right. I don't know for sure but i got that info from the link I posted above. It's a couple years old, and some rules may have changed, but seemed relevant.

I realize you probably would rather race on your DA wheels, but why not just pick up another rear wheel, one that can accept a junior cassette? For races, just swap the rear wheel.

Could you build up a cassette with the right individual spacers and cogs?

Or just drop anything smaller than 14 and add spacers, adjusting the limit screws accordingly.
