Touring - Anyone pass on a handlebar bag? What do you do with your map?

I've tried clipping it to the bars while in a ziplock bag, doesn't stay put to well.

Anyone find a way to tame the thing?

I have a map case that has velcro straps to secure it to the handlebars and rests over the stem. got it 3-4 years ago. I'll see if I can find the name.

My Ortlieb handle bar bag is one of my favorite touring items... I would cry if I couldn't have mine along... Ps.. If your interested in a beat to heck old luis garneu (spelling?) bar bag that has seen better days but does work.. You pay shipping and it can be yours. Has map case on top. It does work though. You pay shipping from 98277. Fits standard bars.. not oversized.

Thanks for the very generous offer Kyak, but I'm out of bar room for a bag without getting another stem. Opted for a smallish frame bag to make up the snack storage space, and the things I take with me are in a small backpack that gets strapped to the Bob.

Never used a bar baq. My front rack has a large platform that I carry either my sleeping bag on tent on, and I stick the map under the bungee cords so I can access it easily.

Try your jersey pocket. If the map is large, I would be wary of a cue sheet holder/clip on fast descents.

BTW...If you are using AC maps, they make terrific windbreakers. Wet from working hard on a climb, but a jacket would be too much? Open the map and put it down the front of your jersey like riders in the TdF used to do with newspapers.

Absolutely. I don't like riding with a map spread out on my bars. Consult, put in pocket. Ride. Look again as necessary.

There are a few people on these forums who tour with aerobars, myself included. I use a kayaking map case with D-loops, which I place on my aerobars and then secure with twine. Fits a compass as well.

I usually keep my map on the top of my rear rack. I use a bungee net like this:

The other thing I sometimes do it slide the map underneath the strap on the top of my ortlieb back roller pannier. These two solutions work well if you have the style of map that is a big book. It probably wouldn't work so well for folding paper maps. I use the compact ortlieb handlebar bag, just for my small camera, wallet/passport and some other small things.

If you've got room on your bar, a small clip board and couple of hose clamps might work to tame the map.
