Tastes like smoked beer! And it's soooooooooo good.

I tried Alaskan's Smoked Porter when it first came out, and it tasted like someone had poured liquid smoke into my beer. Disgusting. I hear that they've since mellowed out the recipe, but the first experience was so bad that I've never given it another chance. They're a solid brewery, though. I suppose I owe it another taste.

I tried Stone's Smoked Porter, and there wasn't but the faintest whiff of smoke. It was like that brief tantalizing sniff of ganja you get when you roll by the disc golf course really fast. Then quickly quenched by porter, and no more smoke for the rest of the glass. I was pretty deep into my cups by the time we opened the bottle, though, and my palate was probably toast. I guess I owe it another taste.

But Left Handed Brewing's Imperial Stout isn't even billed as a smoked beer, and it tastes like the perfect blend of hickory woodsmoke and syrupy thick stout. Oh sweet Bacchus, it's so delicious! I definitely owe it another taste.

And another.

And then maybe one more.

samuel smith's imperial stout/taddy porter/oatmeal stout will cure you of that "smoked" nonsense...

I am Left Handed. Have I been drinking my beer wrong for the last thirty years? I never realized they made it in left handed and right handed versions. Is it like scissors?

This stuff is pretty good. Tastes like barbecue in a bottle.

Is it weird that I want my beer to taste like beer, and not like bacon or bearing grease or smoke?

It's not only weird, it's unhip.

I have tried many, many times. I have never been able to drink my beer with my left hand. However, I am a beer drinking wizard with my right hand :D

If you can pull it off, it's like somebody else is giving you the beer.

Lefthand's Sawtooth Ale is one of my favorites - no smoke though.

I hate smokey beers. I tried Left Handed's Milk Stout and it tasted like smoked salmon. I like smoked salmon, but not in a liquid form.

Continuing on the seafoody beer tangent, Upright has an Oyster Stout, which I'm sure I'll try next time I'm in, but I doubt I'll get a whole glass. Mmmmmm, Oyster Stout.

Before I tried the Shiner stuff, I felt the same way. I picked it up just for the novelty value, but it really did taste good. It tasted like the first swig of beer you drink after taking a bite of a bbq sandwich.

A good brewer knows how to blend flavors. Your beer should always taste like beer. But, as should be expected of The World's Best Beverage, beer can also accommodate a wide and complex variety of flavor, texture, scent, etc. My experience with smoked beer so far has ranged from "meh" to "blech". Left Handed's Imperial was a pleasant surprise with the smoke flavor drifting in at around the middle, warm and toasty up front, with a sweet and heavy finish. I wasn't expecting smoke at all, and had it been sold as a smoked beer I would've passed it by. But I do love me some stout, and this did not disappoint.

But that's only if your hand is asleep.

You sure wouldn't like this one. One of my favorite beers on the planet. The lagavulin/talisker of beer.

The local liquor store (appropriately named "Joy Drug") had a beer tasting from Oskar Blues in the corner. I tried a little bit of each of their beers. Then they gave me the Ten Fidy. I had drool running out of my mouth. I had to buy some. Fortunately, the special was a seven pack for the price of a six pack.

Schlafly Smoked Porter is my fave smoked beer. Aecht Schlenkerla makes a really nice one as well. For the imperial stout crew, Victory Storm King followed by Three Floyds Dark Lord.....my two favorite imperial stouts.

 Joy Drug

I like the Old Chub too.

Last time I was out that way my GF were driving around Longmont and up ahead saw what looked like a palm reader sign or something. Car tires skid to a halt back up parked in the Left Hand brewery. Pretty cool bar there too.
