Southern California - Too "CLOSE" for comfort

I've been "buzzed", screamed at from passing vehicles trying to make me react/crash, honked at, told F you. I've crashed on my own accord, yada yada....BUT yesterday in Vista, on my way to look at a truing stand at Performance....a small truck does a "left hook" right at me.
It was so fast, so unexpected, and within INCHES of impact, that I could feel my blood FLOWING through every vessel and artery in my body.......it was as if my body was preparing for an impact. All I could do is swerve and hope. It scared the Bajesus outta me!:eek:
I'm attentive to what's going on behind me and to my right, but someone cutting across the street from the opposite direction is something that I don't expect/am as vigilant for. MAN what a feeling it caused....
Anyone else out there know what I'm talking about?

I know exactly what you mean, and unfortunately my usual response to that adrenaline surge usually triggers a loogie- or middle-finger-response, which seldom helps the situation. Working on that though, and I usually try to remember to bring a digital camera, (which tends to make confrontational people hesitate long enough to diffuse a situation.)

Rather than let yourself become cynical and always expecting the worst, I suspect it's probably better to assume that the majority of drivers are kind, courteous, or at least non-confrontational; then just add in a dash of vigilance for the texting drivers.

If you ride everywhere expecting ambush, it will only make you miserable like those hapless souls who haunt the somber halls of the A&S forums.

Oh, yeah! I know the feeling all too well. The worst one I've ever had is when I was riding up Fifth Ave. in S.D. from downtown at 9 pm, lit up like a Christmas tree in June. I saw the car coming out of the parking garage, the driver looking back at his friends, and I knew there was no way I was going to escape the impact. It seemed as if I was airborne for a long time; had time to think about emergency rooms and cremation services before I was reunited with the pavement.

Most cell phones have built-in cameras these days, some are quite good too.

When folks ask me for my 'cell number', I tell them I've never been in prison. I suppose one could pop ones Garmin computer off and pretend it's a cellphone/camera long enough to ditch a hothead.

Actually, the quotes are entirely appropriate there. I live in Texas, but I sure ain't no Texan. (I'm a yankee.)
