Bicycle Mechanics - I don't think this is going to work

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

It'll definitely make for an interesting ride.
One of the arms is defective, or maybe the company changed how they phase the spindle and gave you a mixed set. Time to an email to customer disservice.

eighthinch...why am I not surprised.
pay cheap, usually get cheap.

That might be unfair. This almost certainly isn't the result of sloppy manufacturing, which might account for an error of a degree or so. There was probably a design change implemented at one point, and 2 arms from different generations were mixed in one box, either in the packing room of the maker or the seller here in the USA. It's comparable to getting two different length crank arms in one box, something I've seen occasionally with all brands including Shimano and Campagnolo.
Ride it like it is. Don't be like everybody else.

Likely a manufacturer that makes cranks to be compatible with both types.
Shimano (and some others) have the square oriented as a diamond when the arm is held vertcal.
Truvative(and some others) appear as a square. Probably a packaging error.

Cause we all know that paying top dollar guarantees what?

Looks like Eight Inch has cranks oriented both ways

This would make the scenario of a packaging error more likely.

I've always thought it would be a fun prank to play on someone with an ISIS, Octalink, or external BB crank to change the position of a crank arm by by one flute and see how long it takes them to figure it out. Anyone ever tried it?

Too obvious, stick with the tried and true ball bearing in the toptube.

If the rider is using clipless pedals and is just a little bit more than clueless they'll notice right away. Any minor crank damage or offset is *very* noticeable.

I think higher-end products usually means lower number of defects -- and I think most people would be agree except those wishing to pick a fight online.
Note that I used the word usually in all my statements here and that my original statement was made prior to the realization that this was just a simple packaging error and not a manufacturing error, so this is all moot.

just a simple packaging error
What is realy frustrating (and I should of made it more clear) is the level of coustermer service. So far has been zero.Last time i dealt with a "packaging error" not only did the company quickly send a reply email but they called me on the phone and sent a new package next day air at there expense. This was on a friday in the evening and was impressed even more.
Instead I get "Call back Monday".Maybe If I lower my expectations i'll be less disapointed. ;)

Call back Monday, for an issue called in on Friday isn't unreasonable. Possibly the right person was out, and after all Monday is the next business day. In that case "where can we call you on Monday?" would have been better, but I think either way the company deserves 1-2 business days to respond.

Weren't you the one who went right for the denigration of EigthInch. Pulled out the jump to conclusion mat a little quick, didn't you.

We live in an era where the expectation is for instant gratification.

That's weak customer service anyway you look at it. The proper way would be to take the customers name/information and forward and make sure it gets read by the person who needs to read it. *That's* customer service.

I know someone that had to ride ~5 miles with their cranks out of phase (user error, and on square taper... I mean Really how do you do that?) I laughed so hard when they rode up to my house

Ouch! I bought a NOS right crankarm with the square configuration for $5 once thinking deal of the century, 'til I got it home and looked at it more closely.
Paying for that combo platter crankset would be a tad more upsetting, I'd imagine.

their products arent exactly known for quality (i.e. their piss-poor scrambler frameset which I have experience with) -- rather, they're known for being inexpensive. cheaply made products tend to have more problems. that's not denigration -- that's reality.
what exactly are you grumpy about? I already admitted to jumping the gun on the crankset being a defect. Move on.

I spoke with them this morning and its being taken care of. I am really impressed at how its being handle and there level of profesionalism. You can really tell customer service is a high priority for them.Originaly I contacted them outside of business hours and not much could be done.
Thanks for listening to me rant,:rolleyes:sharing your wisdom and the humor.
As for quality,I do not have experience with there products.I choose this brand not only for the price but after researching there was nothing negative found.

If this is not the 1st time that happens then they should learn to check the items before sending them, after the 1st time i would be checking all those cranksets just in case.
