Do you have any pictures of what you're talking about? I can't figure out what you mean by flower pattern.

Try looking through this site:

I built a wheel in the crow's foot pattern: http://spokeanwheel.110mb.com/lacingcf.htm . It worked fine- but I've moved on to a radial laced wheel and I'll be selling it this weekend at the Portland Bike Swap meet.

Wonder if he might mean a twisted spoke wheel?
Hey, that looks pretty cool...

Other than the fact that it looks cool as hell, is there any advantage in lacing a wheel like the one on that picture?

None. but it does look cool as hell.

actually, the load distribution is extremely even amongst the loaded spokes that the wheel becomes practically indestructible over conventional cross lacing.
From what I've read, it was pretty popular in extreme DH when it wasn't called that, or something. Before the advent of really good spokes and rims that could take a beating.
Now there's just no good reason to do it, other than having fun making it.

It's possible to use the number of twists as a way to compensate for having too long spokes for a regular build.
