Here is a simple mod that made my life easier. With this thumb screw, I can center the SD 5 VBrakes with no tools.

(for some reason I need center the brakes very often, possibly because I split the TSR27 and remove the front wheel after every ride.).

139227

Edit: I also plan to give Avid SD Ultimate a try to see if they preserve the centering position better.

That is a great idea! I must go and hunt for some of these.

BTW, I put it only on one side. I have that 'policy' of adjusting the V Brakes only from the left side. This way I avoid tightening or loosing both sides over time.

Why the blue Loctite if you adjust it periodically?

Nice idea, Kam. Thanks for sharing it.

Where did you find the correct size thumb screw? I've never been happy with the centering mechanism on any brakes I've ever had - side pulls, center pulls, v-brakes, all of them.

It is a McMaster part number 92545A111 (3mm x 0.5mm thread, 8mm length, stainless steel and it fits my Avid SD 5 V brakes).

The original screw had a blue thread locker on it, presumably to increase the friction. I had blue Loctite so I put it on but I don't think it is as good as the original (which sticks better to the metal despite making many adjustments).

Edit: apparently there are special threadlockers that allow adjustments. Here is an example http://www.vibra-tite.com/files/VC-3-tds.pdf

Interesting. First time I have heard of this type of product.

Thanks,
