Classic & Vintage - putting new parts on an old frame

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I have an old frame and I am thinking about putting a new Shimano groupset on it. Other than rear spacing, are there other compatibility issues I need to worry about?

Bottom bracket axel width, threading and axel type; rim size and brake reach; threaded vs. threadless headset/stem; seatpost diameter.
Assuming it's a frame for 700C wheels and short reach brakes most of the potential problems are taken care of. D/T cable stops should come with the STI group and go right onto the braze0ons for the shifters.
The question is not usually "can I" but "should I" and you're the only person that can definitively answer that. It's seldom cost effective but if you're really attached to a frame or swung a great deal on the parts, why not?

Long story short is that I use this frame (a '72 paramount) as a fixed gear bike, but I am buying components for a custom road bike that will take a long time to get here. In the mean time I want to use the Paramount as a road bike until my custom bike is ready and transfer the fixed parts to a beater frame for now. When the custom gets here the Paramount goes back to being fixed, the ultegra goes on the custom and I have two beautiful bikes perfect for the two kinds of riding I love most. The rear spacing on the frame is 120, but it can be spread since it's steel. I may have to get vintage brakes though, not just because of the reach but also the bolts. I had considered doing a restoration with campy NR parts, but it is expensive and I need the ultegra parts anyway for the new bike.

I did just that with my '84 Club Fuji frame. I didn't need nor did I WANT to buy a newer frame 'cause the Fuji was in great shape, even after 20 years. Full Ultegra group and new wheels was the major expense. I couldn't be happier. :)
I like my 1989 Paramout with full STI-- no real major problems, I just threw some 9spd crap on it and it worked more or less. '72 will be a hair trickier however.
doin the same to a 79 Schwinn Continental
but I cant afford the top end stuff but still upgrading from factory

I believe it is possible to fit modern brakes by doing a bit of judicious drilling

I have decided to restore the bike with vintage campy NR parts. I found some inexpensive campy wheels of the right vintage, which seemed like a sign. Thanks for your input!

There are a couple of options here with the brakes. You can either purchase a set of vintage long reach brakes (as you mentioned) or visit www.loosescrews.com and they sell drop bolts to allow the use of short reach brakes on older bikes. The bolts are not cheap.
Check around, but I do remember seeing where you could still get Shimano 105 calipers in long reach. I think Nasbar had them in the spring of 2004.

Ok. Just went to www.loosescrews.com and you can get a set of shimano long reach calipers for $58. Check out this site for lots of vintage parts that are new.
