Cyclocross - Lugged Schwinn Crosscut With Track Drops

Well I get my bike back today. It is a 90ish lugged Schwinn Crosscut. The bike had a broken seat stay on the drive side when I got it. Luckily my friend is a bike builder in Portland. He cut off the old drops and put some track drops on it so I can run it as a single. Will post pics soon.:)

You could have just put horizontal drop outs on it and ran it as a single and still had the option of gearing it sometime...

No gears.

Sorry to burst your bubble Kurt but it is not going to be a fixie. Or spraybomed what ever that means. I like lugged steel frames. I like single speeds (with actual single speed or track dropouts). These are both hard to find in a cyclocross frameset. I am sure there are manufacturers out there making them but I also like vintage. See my dilemma.

Edit: can you actually Drew a generic hybrid? I think this bike was repaired and possibly improved.

The cable stop on the drive side chainstay looks a little silly with the track ends though.

P.S. WTF is "Drewed?"

"Drewing" is the process of taking a rare or valuable frame and removing all the braze-ons that allow it to be a geared bike for aesthetic purposes. Or it's the process of taking any frame and removing the braze-ons that allow it to be a geared bike. Depends of your point of view. Anyhow, the basic idea is to make the frame look less like a conversion and more like a dedicated singlespeed or fixed gear.

Some of us here appreciate nice or vintage and rare frames enough that it bothers us to see such a frame irreversibly (probably) modded. Those people make sense, and I'm among them. Some of us think no frame, no matter how inexpensive and easily available, should ever be altered that way if isn't necessary. The latter group suffers from an obsession with trying to force everyone else on this site to adhere to their personal balance of form and function. These people often pop up whenever they think someone's buying components that they "don't need" or that "won't make them any faster" and can be particularly whiny when they think someone's modding their frame to look more like a competitive ride.

I love bicycles, but I never take them so seriously that everything about them has to be practical. I have a car for that.

M_S I plan on taking all of the cable guides off. If you notice in the second set of pictures the derailluer guide is gone.

B17 thanks for the info on "Drewing". Makes sense and I agree. I have a 65' 531 viking road bike that I could not imagine altering. The schwinn was broke and yes I could have had it repaired. A lugged cyclocross bike with track drops are few. Like you said it isn't a rare bike.

Is it just me or are some people on this site really angry?

Thanks for the info B17. cable guides can usually be added anyways, and this frame was both broken and not rare. I think it's going to be really cool, post more pictures of your progress!

I like it a lot! Post some pics when you get it built up. I am riding an older Miyata Triplecross which is similar to the crosscut. One thing I think is funny about these is that people call them generic hybrids but then pay hundreds for a Bridgestone XO, a generic hybrid.

trackends, rather? i'm grateful to not see a hybrid sporting track drop bars, as the title of this thread lead me to believe...

Thread is a few months old, but I just wanted to say: great rehab of a good older frame that would likely be sitting in a landfill otherwise. I bet it will look fantastic. Post pics if you're done, please!
