Looks like a fraud auction to me. This says it all from the high bidder. http://members.ebay.com/ws2/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewUserPage&userid=read-my-me-page!!

There are a lot of bike guys on eBay lately that are INTENTIONALLY running up the bids of fake auctions so that the unwitting won't bid & get scammed. I know that I have done it. Somebody has to look out for the naive eBay newbies!

Read the bidder names: SCAMBOT101 with no feedack.

It is also NOT a 2004 - look at the colors and the postal decal.....

I heard of folks jacking up the price to screw over sniping too.

I forgot where, but i saw a palm tungsten get won for $4k a while back...and the winner got negative feedback for it since he refused to pay. Pretty funny if you ask me....e-bay snipers suck, go win the auction the right way.

Really though I think EBay has went to heck...hotbed of scammers, misleading auctions (for sale ford mustang NOT GM DODGE FERRARI....) wtf really.. , and all kinds of other retardedness in general...it's leaves me as annoyed as a trip to wal-mart does...and that's pretty sad.

Used to be worse, I find ebays like a roller coaster...it gets better better better better...then BAM to the bottom and back up again.

When I started ebaying say ... 5-6 years ago scamming was really a problem, and tracing your money and proving it was a scam was difficult. Now with paypal protecting buyers and savvy credit card users fraud is much lower. However there are some things that can't be cured without a large expenditure of staff resources on ebays part...unless they heavily moderate it (to get rid of NIKE R4 Shox **NOT AIR FORCE 1 Vince Carter**) then its going to happen and buyer beware :|

well actually they could change the script to check and see if your the high bidder
if so not accept a bid till your out bid, that would help some
beside for that price it should have SHIMANO DURA ACE not Ultegra :)

I still wish EBay had a way of banning snipers. At least to me, EBay sniping defeats the purpose of an auction, since it forces everyone to lay their cards on the table, and hides the sniper's bid until the end....nobody wants to pay the max value, and the seller wants as much as possible....since the sniper basically bypasses competition this way, he screws the other bidders and teh seller.

Really I think snipers should be banned from Ebay, and PayPal (just to ensure they don't sign up for another EBay acct). That would end the practice real quick....they could possibly use their terms of service to enforce this...most TOSs have a "one user per acct" clause, so I bet it can be done.

your max bid is your max bid plain and simple

In this case if you were stupid enough to pay 15k for 2.5k bike you deserve it. The only ones bidding on this bike are people selling it. The real scams come from paying for but not recieving the goods. If you pay to much (something I did early on) then it's buyer beware!

See the attachment for the "Sponsered ad" that was displayed when I viewed this thread.

For the unknowledgeable here, what is sniping? I've bought a few things on eBay, mainly buy it now, and I've been pretty pleased.

Sniping is when you use a program or service to enter a bid for you in the last say 5 seconds of an auction. This prevents other bidders from trying to outbid at the last minute and can cause other people to not drive the price up very high. I actually like to snipe. It makes it easier for me especially when an auction ends in the early hours of the morning. Ebay is like a strategy game to me.

I agree with raceon. Anyone who has been to a real auction knows that the action never heats up until the very end. There's ALWAYS that one guy sitting at the back that throws that final bid on after everyone else has given up. That said, I don't really agree with sniping software. Seems a bit like cheating, but as long as it's not against the rules I will defend anyone's right to use it if they choose.

ok I was refering to the same guy biding 4 or 5 times in a row to up the bid

atleast they dont let it run past the time limit
seen that would continue to accept bits as long as they were coming in
could end up 30 mins or so beond deadline time as long as atleast 2 kept biding

No, it's not against the rules. I believe it's not a fair way to auction though, like Cat.

What if the seller could set an undisclosed "grace period" at the end of the auction? Then, if sniping occured other bidders could still come in and outbid the sniper within the grace perioid?

Boy, I need some education here. What is the purpose of running up your own bid to keep someon from bidding, or a fake auction?

The listing is not longer there, my guess is that it has been reported and withdrawn by eBay.
These are shameful practices but should not let us feel that this is what eBay's turning to. There are con artists in every trade, I'm for a combination of buyers beware and good regulations/controls that don't interfere with running honest business. There are many genuine businesses on eBay with great service and were great deals can be found + eBay let us buy/sell our used stuff we could not do any other way.

I just did a search on Google using the words "Ebay" and "Fraud". I could not believe the enormous number of hits and sites that have topics on this widespread crime. It's really out of control on Ebay. Totally out of control.

As for that 15K bike, I wonder if the sellers who are bidding the price up realize they have to pay Ebay fees on the sale! A 15K sale would be enormous!

I've seen more than a few other auction sites that do that, there is a time limit on the auction obviously, but if somebody comes in to bid in the last seconds of the auction, the auction is extended for 15-30 minutes, so there is no use for sniping, at least e-bay style.

It is and it isn't. It would be nice if some authority would come and do something about the fraud that is happening, most of it could be easily solved, but there are all kinds of issues with doing it because of all of the inter-state trade stuff.

I also say it isn't as big of a problem because if you think of all the auctions that end in any given day a very small percentage of them will have any issues with fraud, especially if you weed out the people who bought things without fully reading or understanding what they were buying.
