I had a 50 tooth on my steamroller and it was tight. It also depends on your BB spindle length. I have a Sugino 75 109mm spindle. A longer spindle would give you more clearance but probably screw up your chainline. I don't think the 172.5mm cranks will be your problem because I run 175's.

I hear you, man! If I was running a 52, I'd be pushing my bike while I was walking more than I'd be pushing the pedals.
I could see it for a velodrome, but not on the street...

Yeah, I'm a little aprehensive about it too but that's what Chuck sent me when I bought the Miche group. It's not that hilly here so I figured it'd be alright. I guess I'll send it back for a smaller chainring. Thank's for the responses. So crank is ok, but chainring will not clear. Got it. I don't want a messed up chainline so what size chainring would be optimal for a steamroller?
