actually, with tectonic plates all locked together, it makes sense that if there is a big mov in one point it will affect other points and then other points etc like falling dominos. So we have had haiti, japan, chile now taiwan...pacific rim or close to it. something gonna give in southern euope in response?

Damn, I hope that big fault line running just west of Denver doesn't ever slip big.
I remember going climbing through that fault line once. It runs through a canyon and if you know the right spot, you can climb inside of the fault.
Now whose fault is that?

how you doin' on your bucket list?
anyone remember a movie from from maybe 40+ years ago. there was an earthquake and the earth eventually split into 2 pieces and at the end of the movie there was a couple that were either separated by the split or wound up together - I forget exactly. I think as the earth was splitting the scientists tried to blow a hole in the earth's crust to stop the crack

someone in p&r claimed that there was a conspiracy to hide the truth that the earth is actually growing. what a plonker.

Winter is looking less and less evil, eh Ruben?
Taiwan is made of carbon fibre. All will be fine.

I think if the earth was growing the water level wouldn't be rising
Theres the progress, we have found a way to talk around the problem (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aVx3Qv1Q6PU)

actually it is made of silicon. bikes is only its second specialisation. computers and semiconductors is its main focus.
i just had a thought. does this mean iphones are going to get more expensive?

Looks like earth got into rodeo mode and decided to shake us all to hell! Though that makes me wonder how it feels when you're on your bike and suddenly you get strucked by an 8 and Up earthquake...

Nah, there'll be a big sale of scratch-and-dented iPhones next week, though!

Tell that to the Okie's who just had one last week. Only 4.4 but nonetheless nowhere to run, nowhere to hide......

That one was roughly 60 miles from my house. My wife felt it (she was in bed, propped up against the wall). We all thought she was crazy until the news feeds started coming in.
With tornado season coming up, gotta decide to be either sucked up to the heavens or sucked down to hell...
Hold on, Taiwan got hit by a earthquake? This mean another across the board price increase on bikes?

Nah, Taiwanese electronics manufacturers have most of their factories on the mainland these days (hence the "news" about labour violations at Apple suppliers...)

How about those huge waves that killed two people on a cruise ship!
We're all gonna die! 2012 y'all!
The New Madrid fault in SE Missouri is due. When it went off in the early 1800's they say it made the Mississippi run backwards, and people felt the quake on the east coast.

I can tell you that if you are driving your car and a 6.2 earthquake hits, you will stop and get out and look at your tires. It happened to me and I thought I had 4 flat tires. Other folks were also stopping and looking at their tires.

Correct. I went to grad school at SE Miss. St. U. studying geology. My job as a grad assistant was earthquake preparedness presentations. Supposedly those 1812 new madrid quakes rang church bells in boston and were felt in montreal. the waves traveled so far mainly because the interior of the US and canada are made up of old and brittle rock. cool stuff!

3 big quakes in 3 developed countries...japan chile then taiwan. Minimal casualties
1 lesser quake in Haiti...200k dead.
Ain't life unfair.

lesser quake in Haiti? a 7 is a lesser quake? Population density, building codes, soil structure, bedrock, etc all come into play with earthquakes, not just richter scale ratings.

yup, building code utilization (lack thereof) were the killer in Haiti.
