Road Cycling - What about older Trek 2100 bikes?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
As I work toward getting a "newer" bike, I spotted some carbon-framed Trek 2100 models. What's the take on these? The carbon frames have been discontinued - are there problems with them? Any opinions?
Here is an example of a completed eBay auction for one of these. Is this a fair price range for this type of bike?

Just checking out my options. Any opinions, info, advice is appreciated.
Thanks,
Dean

hey dean, i have one of these older 2100's built up similarly to the one in the auction. mine is carbon and aluminum, though. i have been riding it for over two years now, and i am happy with it. i have read some bad reviews about it not being stiff enough, but it is only my second road bike, so i really couldn't tell you. i have been racing it all season, and for me it is a great racer. it seems to be stiff enough, and it wouldn't cost too much to replace if i cracked it in a crash. it is fairly light, but for comfort, the aluminum seat stays can be painful on a bumpy road. hope this helps.

My 2200 is a 2002 model and it's SL Aluminum. I would guess they went to CF in 2003? Anyone?

I believe that the Trek 2000 series is an Aluminum frame with carbon fork and seat stays. The 5000 series is the all carbon frame...at least in '04 and '05.

I looke at an '03, & an '04, & one dealer said there were big differences; like the carbon fiber stays.

The seller found a sucker for that one.

They were also produced concurrently with the All CF OCLV 5xxx series. They were gone from the lineup around 97 and replaced with aluminum framed bikes with the same model numbers.

I used to own one of those. Had many enjoyable rides on that bike. Seek one that is in great condition and well cared for. No need to over pay for these bikes.
