Okay, I am the first to say that Lance is top notch...

But the millions he is making on sponsorships....isnt that his pay? What exactly has he "done" for us that nees to be rapayed.

Actually, it's a toss up between Sosa, Jordan and Ali. I may swing Ali's way. Shoot, with all the racism he overcame during a time before civil rights were even enforced, and the "I am the greatest!", who can pass up a vote for Cassius Clay?

I always thought Sosa was a considerate and humble guy during that season when he was going against McGuire for the home run race. I remember the media chasing after him trying to get him to say something bad or nasty about McGuire, and Sosa always gave the props up. I also thought he was the underdog of the two, especially in light of McGuire's supplementing with the ("legal") testosterone precurser. I thought he was a good role model for hispanics and blacks, and it was one of the few years when I considered stepping on a Cubs field for a game. He also had a charity organization for the poor kids back in his homeland, and he took trips back there to encourage the youth to follow their dreams while living in poverty.

Nowadays, I don't know too much about what's going on with Sosa... so I can't comment if you have something to say about what he's doing now. I just always admired him back then. I liked his sportsmanship, especially when people were clearly not as enamored by him as they were by McGuire.

I wish I had a dollar for everytime I've seen one of these "greatest sportsman" polls on the Internet over the last few years. They seem to be cropping up everywhere. Incidentally, on the one occasion where I bothered to go and check on the final results, they appeared in an article which went on to say something along the lines of "this is clearly the result of block voting by several internet forums dedicated to this activty" or something along those lines.

I have to ask, if that's going to be the attitude directed at whoever wins, why bother?

Don't get me wrong...I really wasn't questioning it in any way of suggesting he doesn't deserve it. But the way I was looking at this, everyone else on that list, had entire careers of beauty in some way. 10 to 20 years + of being the best and upholding being both an athlete and a sportsman. Sosa...hit a bunch of home runs for a few years. Just doesn't seem on par to me. I do remember that time, and I do remember how humble he was about his ability etc...I also know him to be a very skilled hitter...just not amongst the best in the last 50 years...thats all I meant and you explanation was what I wanted, I did forget what kind of player he was. (although in truth, I don't believe he was clean, I don't believe many pros are...but thats my own cynical view of pro sports ;))

Sosa is a cheater and we all know it. MLB did not really care however, nor did the american people. And why Sosa over many of the other great hitters and great ball players. Babe Ruth out of shape and still hit and pitched better then most people around today.

I believe they may have all been cheaters, but McGuire got the most hits. Bonds was also a cheater, but then again, none of them were really cheaters since the supplements were legal at the time.

Baseball back then was different than it is now. Do you really think if they resurrected that guy and stuck him out on the field that he would really do as well as he did?

Yeah I guess I can't say much. (not to be harsh with the next statement) but I hate baseball and have since 94...to be honest, so I only know about sosa from that last season (maybe the next I remember tracking the homerun thing)....

So in the end it is my own personal bias towards a sport I have very little respect for anymore. Baseball is right up there with hockey in my own little world :D

Depends. strike zone is signifigantly smaller make the hitting zone DAMN easy now. overall pitching is better and more organized and when a pitcher gets tired he gets pulled (maybe negating the strike zone issue). I still think he would do well. I don't know if he would absolutely dominate...he sure wouldn't be a 'player' but a DH. Unless he played first like the incredible athlete called Cecil Fielder ;)...it is tough to say really...but I think the strike zone would definately play into his hands...he had a good eye and with the tiny strike zone he would only need his timing and boom...the ball is gone...

I don't know if it's such a favor. I mean, look at OLN. When Lance goes, so does cycling, and so how is that a favor to cycling?

It would be a greater favor if they checked out some of our local boys and nominated them instead. We got a whole team of Navigators I think are great riders with heart that could have been nominated. Then perhaps people could see there are others in the sport we can look to for continuing the cycling tradition, and they'll see there are others we can root for, which could lead to more broadcasting of cycling events.

I can add Lance as a fourth, but on that list, I would definitely put Ali and Jordan over him easy. I can identify with Ali and Jordan more than with Armstrong. They're all great athletes though.

Why? I might love cycling but I don't think he is the greatest sportsman in the last 50 years. I think ali, jordan and gretsky did more for their respective sports then Lance did. Sorry if I cant have my own opinion on that.

I don't think it matters a great deal. Let's just say for example that everyone on bikeforums rallies and votes for Lance. Now let's say that someone cross-posts the topic to bicycling.com and cyclingforums.com, and they all jump on the bandwagon. So Lance wins the prize in a canter. However, don't think the news of the organised campaign won't get back to the people running the poll. They'll publish the results alright, along with a comment along the lines of "this is clearly the result of block voting in an organised campaign by bicycling websites around the Internet". I've seen it happen before.

The question is, would "winning" a competition like that really be of any significant benefit to Lance Armstrong or the sport of cycling?
