I am planning a trip from Denver to San Francisco through New Mexico and Arizona. I am looking for a pair o' riding shoes that will provide comfort while walking in town and effectiveness for cycling on my Trek 520. Any suggestions? This will be my first long long distance trip and I want good shoes. Are there styles or companies that are better for women?
Get those Shimano sandals. They have the recessed cleats so you can walk around comfortably, and being sandals, are of course, cooler for your feet, and since you'll spend a lot of time in the warmer climates, your "dawgs" may thank you for it later.

another vote for the shimano sandals, while i've only rode them for about 100mi so far, i think they're great, rather comforable & easier than either of the 2 mountain bike shoes i've had to walk around in, they're a smidgen more difficult to clip in & out of for some reason, but i assume i'll adjust
do consider though that nothing beats cycling shoes for cycling, & nothing beats 'round town shoes for 'round town

nashbar has mtn shoos (cannondale, lake, shimano, nashbar brands) suitable for riding
and light hiking. spd compatible, too. priced $30-100.
i'd worry about sunburn with sandals.
