It's not much fun being British when major sporting events are on most of the time. Our government always seems to expect greatness but barely chips in pennies to help produce it. So in light of that, Hoy's track race was effing brilliant. I scared the poo out of my son when I screamed at the TV! Some of these track guys are HUGE! (click pic for full-size version)

g'day,

just as well the poms can ride (some) bikes reasonably.......otherwise you wouldn't have any gold medals at all...lol.......speaking of poms & sport......Oz is divided into 2 seperate sporting camps when it comes to Rugby, (doesn't matter which). The north of the country are fanatical about it & the Sth don't know anything about it & don't care to, (we refer to it as 'mobile mud wrestling'!). I was debating the merits of thug-bee with a collegue from the Nth of the country. This was just after the poms had won the world cup. I told him thug-bee was that bad a game that it shouldn't even be classified as sport. he had no answer to my retort that "Rugby can't be a 'sport'....if it was, the poms wouldn't be any good at it!".......LOL,

cheers,

Hitchy

Yeah, I can't believe the poms won something. :D

Did you here that Steve Harmison is currently ranked as the world's best test bowler?

What's going on? Is this "bizzaro" world?

Hey now, apparently we're good at sailing too. It must be our nautical past or something.

G'day,

i wondered where the rest of the medals on the tally for the poms came from!...I couldn't find 'bog snorkelling' or 'botting ****', 'drinking warm beer' or even darts in the sports results, so it had me stumped........lol

cheers,

Please. You can keep your Pom stuff for the English. Funny how all the good British cyclists are Scottish :D

Believe me, nobody was more depressed than me watching England win the Rugby world cup (having said that, Rugby is the best game in the world bar none ... a debate for another time).

As for the cricket, well now you're talking my game! Played for East of England when I was a schoolboy. Then got burnt out. Of course Australia hasn't had a decent fast bowler since Dennis .... muahahahahahahahaha :D

Well, it took almost a whole bottle of white wine before I felt comfortable in the gutter :D

What is it with you guys though? For a country of barely 20 million to put up the numbers in sport that you do is amazing. What is the funding like in Australia from a government perspective and non-government perspective? Needless to say, it's absolute kak in the UK!

That's a rather large raw nerve you've got there!

And of course an accent defines where you're from ...

G'day Mac,

on a serious note, we aussie's are obsessed with sport, & this is reflected in the govt. funding & support....elite performers (or potentially elite performers) are looked after very well & given every encouragement, coaching etc etc to achieve their potential. With all this, there are huge expectations placed upon them as well....It's probably also got al ot to do with our climate as well, where better for kids to be encouraged to do swimming, cycling, horse riding etc etc....it's not just olympic sports either, cricket, thugby (both brands) etc etc we out perform anyone in the world on a 'per capita' basis. And of course the whole country goes into 'mourning if the poms actually ever beat us at cricket! (not that it happens very much!...lol). Sport is part of our national image, it's who we are & how we see ourselves...in some ways I'm very proud of that, (in a lot of ways actually)....but in others ways its quite sad,.....for a nation that has much to be proud of, other than sport, mostly we're not interested......now the serious discussion is out of the way......back too our national sport of 'hanging s**t on the poms!,

cheers,

Hitchy

no raw nerves no, was just a joke...

accent probably 99.9% of the time does determine where you're from. ok, sure there's an exception with millar as he's a bit of a mixed bag - born in malta, lived in scotland, live in south UK between spells in hong kong and spent his life in france since the age of about 18 yrs old but has a kinda posh southern accent.

i was in oz just over 2 yrs ago. know an oz family who i lived there for a bit with. the daughter who was still in school told me how much sport they do on a daily basis. for their p.e lessons they went on massive runs, long swims in the sea, surf life saving competitions, etc, etc. compare that with a uk kid's school sporting life. 2/3 times a week? an hour of football or cricket or athletics in the summer then in winter chuckin' a bean bag into a hoop or something sh*te. the oz kids are brought up on massive amounts of sporting activity. alot of kids in the uk can't even be arsed with an hour of football! getting kids into sport, and keeping them interested into their late teens when they want to start going out on the p*ss etc, is the base for future sporting successes. basically the uk government needs to stop selling sports fields to build houses on and provide places for kids to participate in sports. how many velodromes do we have? how many 50mtr swimming pools do we have? not many...
