Does using MTB tires on paved roads just make you more tired quickly or just less effective?

Think of the friction! After riding with mtb tyres on tarmac stop and feel how hot they are. You probably gain a good 5mph with 1.5 slicks.

both. buy road tires. they are actually quite easy to switch back and forth according to what you are going to ride that day.

If a mountain is the only bike you own and you frequently ride both on and off road, it's more practical to have another wheelset with slicks on them.

Look at the bikes in the Commuter Bikes thread over in the commuting section - the bulk of the MTB's have slick tires for use on road as knobbies don't make sense to use for extended distances on road.
