Road Cycling - first 100k ride

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

im a newby and i want to ride a cancer charity ride tomorrow i have been riding a mtn bike as a road bike but i just got a road bike 3 days ago went for a 20 mile ride and it was sooooo much better ,any way should i ride a 50K or the 100K ride there will be 4 SAG stops ,any pointers would be great
50K is 30 miles so it sounds like you could do that without any difficulty. Are they on the same course? If so, you could see how you feel after 50K and decide then.

a 100k was my first ride on my new road bike. But I had been doing 2-3 hour gigs previously, and had been cycling for 4 months beforehand. I could have gone longer except my saddle hurt too much

Most charity rides have rest-stops stocked with power-bars, gatorade, cookies, etc. You might want to call the organizers of the ride and get clarification as to what type of ride support you can expect. However, if you're addicted to a certain flavor / type of power bar, then by all means pack some with you. If you "just gotta have it" don't rely on the ride organizers having it for you!
You know what your body needs to keep moving better then any of us do -- some people can eat a full tuna-fish sandwich at each rest-stop, and some people (like me) would puke if they ate more then a couple fig newtons.

well i really dont know what i might need this will be my first real ride ,i have been doing mostly 10 to 15 rides a day with one 40 mile ride on the mtb it about killed me i think ,i was just too tired could i have prevented this by eating a power bar on the way ,i did drink 1 bottle of water should i have drank more ????
One water bottle and no food intake on a 40 mile ride will cause most riders to feel bad. You were probably getting yourself pretty dehydrated. The standard "rule of thumb" is to down a water bottle every hour, along with getting a couple hundred calories of food into your system. Riding even at a relaxing pace can easily burn 400 or 500 calories an hour -- there is a limit as to how long you can keep that up before your body starts screaming in protest. I personally swear by fig newtons -- available in any convenience store and they come in nice bite-size chunks!

My very first group ride was a 100 K, and the most I had ridden prior to that was a meer 17 miles. I ended up doing about 46 of the 62 miles, but that was awesome for me. Never looked back! Go for the 100 K, the worst thing that will happen is you will SAG in, and it wouldn't be the end of the world!
