Mountain Biking - apprx. 700.00 full sus/xc/mtn bike who has the best deal right now on one ?

i have 700.00 plus shipping (800.00) to spend on a full suspension xc/mountain bike

need something that is a deal of a lifetime "priced"

this is for a brother who had recent kneee injury and wants to start back in shape.

5" 8"" tall 190 lbs. until he starts riding again.

Why does he need a full suspension? I'm pretty happy with my hard-tail, they can be comfortable too. And they save some weight, and of course cost.

Best bet is used. The bikes that Kona posted are really low end with pi** poor suspension systems. I'd look for something that was originally priced at a grand or better as that's where the better systems start coming to play. Scour your local shops for closeout deals.

I think the problem you're running into is that it's extremely difficult for many of us to (at least with a straight face and a clear conscience) recommend a decent new full-suspension bike for $700. We might be able to find you a used one were we to scour through a lot of craigslist and eBay postings but you could just as easily (or with the same effort as the case may be) do that yourself. And then as Raiyn suggests, you can come back and ask our opinions. In that price range, many of us (myself included) would be more inclined to point you towards a hardtail because it would be a more solid recommendation. And again, as Raiyn suggested, you might also want to consider visiting your LBSes to see what they might have on clearance or used. Buying used (and to a great extent, even new) over the Internet is not for the faint of heart or someone who doesn't have a whole lot of experience with bikes. And even those with experience take a chance.

Go to your LBS. I have bought tons of bikes from them. They know know me so when I got to the shop I get good deals and service fast. I just bought a road bike for a great price and got clipless pedals thrown in because of how I only use their LBS.

If you live in or near NH buy there (no sales tax in NH). Thats how I get all my bikes cause i have realitiives who live there.

Trek makes AWESOME hardtails, I have a 4300, and i have heard only great revues about the rest of the line, I love mine.

That is flawed reasoning. If you spend $800 and pay 8% in tax you will spend $64 That might seem like a lot but you will likely spend $50 to have a bike shipped to you. If it is used you might end up spending tons more to get it operational.

I too, second the hard tail approach. I am not sure which is the bigger sticking point, the fact that you want a full suspension or that you want to spend $800? (w/shipping) Either way, unless he is VERY sure he is going to ride for a long time, you could probably even get a good hardtail for less. Or you can waste $800 on an inferior Full Suspension.

Tax and shipping on a $700 bike is pretty much a wash as far as I am concerned. For $700 I would rather see what I am buying. Sometimes what you buy gets damaged in shipment and UPS is not easy to deal with on damage claims.

$700 hardtail? I would look at a Gary Fisher Tassajara. Then look at any other $700 hardtail with more standard geometry. Parts are probably about the same on any bike in that same price range.


If you want full suspension and want to save money here is a link for you. Seriously this bike may be just the thing just to find out if a bike is a viable mean of exercise. Myself, I would rather get a cheap hybrid or disposable hardtail than this full suspension thing. But its pretty.

I disagree.

It is red and a lot fancier looking than than my dark blue Fisher. But not as pretty as my red road bike.

My two new Bontrager knobbies cost more than that "Special" deal bike at Wal-Mart!!! I see those bikes all over in the mornings with the riders who have lost their licenses due to DWI's. Got to get to work somehow and that $69.99 Softtail suits them fine I guess!!!
