Forum Suggestions & User Assistance - Women's Cycling Forum?

I've checked that feature. For some reason, the person thinks they are getting notifications of threads which I see they do not subscribe to in the Women's cycling forum. They are getting notifications for THIS thread, thinking it's in the Women's cycling forum. I think someone is getting confused by thinking this thread is actually in the Women's cycling forum when it isn't, then everytime someone responds, he gets a notification and gets upset.

Okay so I actually didn't get a notification per se. I had a thread that I had subscribed to (I have automatic thread subscription on for when I post) that was in the Women's Cycling forum and it showed up in my User Control Panel under "New Subscribed Threads" which is actually a byproduct of an automatic search.



Currently, I don't see a way to unsubscribe from a thread- Joe will have to look into adding some kind of way to unsubscribe from threads. I go through this myself everytime I go on my long vacations- the notifications continue to roll in and I ended up asking Joe to divert all my emails to another location so my own email account wouldn't get overloaded from the threads I've subscribed to.

There's an "unsubscribe" under each thread in a thread index. I just used that. There's no easy way to search against my own posts in a forum which is no longer visible to me otherwise I would have just done that and then whacked them all at once. Now I have to unsubscribe the blackholed threads as they appear in my CP notifications list.

I'm actually not referring to you, Khuon. The person who complained assumed they had been posting in the Women's Cycling forum, when actually, they had NOT. This thread we are posting in is NOT in the Women's Cycling forum- hence, his confusion.

I have a couple of issues that I haven't seen addressed here...

1) By limiting access to the women's forum, the usefulness of searches will be decreased. My wife just got into cycling and as we were going through the bike buying process, she relied on my knowledge quite a bit. But when it came to answering her questions/concerns, there were times that I was at a loss. Thanks to the wealth of knowledge on this board, I could just run a quick search and generally get answers to her questions. Sometimes these threads were in the women's forum, sometimes not. There were a couple of times that I didn't even know that a particular question could have unique applications for a woman and with the current setup I would never have known. In our situation, and I assume that we are not alone, I’m more involved in cycling than she is. There’s nothing physically preventing her from researching her own questions, but she has other interests that she dedicates her time to knowing that I spend time online reading forums and articles and that I’ll pass along any information that I think she would be interested in or benefit from. Yes I could post a question in the general forum for my wife, but there’d be a good chance that I’d be able to find a detailed discussion if I could search the women’s forum. Incidentally, I’ve also found answers to my questions in the woman’s forum in threads that are not particularly sensitive (i.e. impressions of different clothing brands). Will there be an active effort to move these types of posts to the general forum?

2) Will this system actually provide the confidentiality that is desired and foster community growth? When a new female comes across the message board, is there anything that even hints at the existence of a woman’s forum (other than the message in Koffee’s sig), which could be the catalyst for her to become a contributing member, or at the least give her the information that keeps her interested in cycling? Also, what is the system for granting users access that PM Koffee and how do you prevent letting a man in? If a man slips through and makes inappropriate posts, I’d assume you’d ban them from the forum. How does this differ from keeping an open forum where you ban inappropriate posters? I’m not questioning motives behind the change, just looking at the possible ramifications of it.

I can understand the desire to have a forum that women feel safe posting questions they may otherwise be hesitant to ask. But shouldn’t this be the case in all forums? Requiring an extra step to get write access or strictly moderating the forum both seem like reasonable solutions to me, but only allowing access by a select few runs the risk of decreasing this forum’s value.

To gain access to the women's forum (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php/568805-Access-to-the-Women-s-Forum), you can send a PM to Siu Blue Wind (administrator).

You do need to have at least 50 posts to gain access. We've had a couple of men try and sneak in, so we needed to set up some requirements for access.

Why would it be considered "sneaking in"? Are there men's-only forums where women are kept out? Seems like a big ol' double-standard to me.

Because it would violate the policies of this private company's website.
