I mess around in a canoe also. Nothing serious though. I really don't know what I am doing in a boat.

I also have considered paddling my children sometimes, if that is what you meant.

Sometimes paddle one of my sea kayaks. It's neat when the dolphins or sea lions come out to play. The whale migration is interesting too.

Haven't done any peddling - the C&V folks seem to do some of that on eBay and Craigslist.

I spent some time paddling at a lake this January, but generally not my thing.

I used to sea kayak on Lakes Michigan and Superior, and got up to Michigan's U.P. a few times...its Sylvania Wilderness Area is like a mini BWCA...pristine clear chilly waters loaded with bass. During my time I had a custom African marine mahogany boat, a Valley Avocet (rotomolded), and a Current Designs Solstice GT (glass). All were beautiful to look at and paddle. Although that chapter is closed I always enjoyed paddling inland lakes silently coasting up near wildlife to take a few snapshots...deer, eagles, otters, etc.

Yes, my girlfriend and I have a Tandem Perception Swifty II Kayak (big boat, more stable than most canoes I have been in). We enjoy seeing the waterways from a human powered boat. Last summer we didn't get out together much, she had surgery and was recovering, wasn't able to paddle till mid august :( kinda sucked. I also have a Perception "Rythm 11" that is actually a Dagger Element 11.2 that was molded for Dick's Sporting goods. I use it for fishing and just getting out on the water alone.

I cant wait to get out on my kayak, but not till its a wee bit warmer. Maybe April...Going to get out on my bike tomorrow, :)

I'm a rower (crew) and I also do a bit of outrigger canoe. For my sins I also have to do the admin for 3 dragon boat teams.

Used to do a bunch of paddling. Canoes, K-1 kayaks. Downriver and gates. Couldn't keep proficient, so I let that one go. Maybe when I stop moving around so much, I'll start again.

Yup, paddling is awesome...loads of nice quiet rivers here. I had a canoe for years then sold it when I got a kayak. I wish I hadn't...I didn't need to. I love the kayak but for camping you can't beat the storage room of a canoe.

Yeah, those are some very nice looking daysailers. They put my pitiful little sunfish to shame. A little more hassle to set up and take down, but oh so worth it. Before I got the sunfish I had an old Chrysler Mutineer daysailer. I'm not sure what it was about that boat, but it was damned fast for it's weight. I actually made money off of that boat, which is exceedingly rare.

Avid paddler here. We try to get up to the Boundary Waters, Quetico, or Woodland Caribou once a year for a week long paddle trip. A couple of years ago we did a bunch of the Bloodvein River from Red Lodge to Artery Lake on the border with Manitoba. Hope to do the lower half down to Lake Winnepeg next year.

I also build my own kevlar canoes. I made a mold in my basement. Looks just like a canoe. Apply wax/release compound, coat with epoxy and drape with kevlar cloth. Many man hours later of sanding and installing gunwales seats etc I end up with a 42.5 lb tripping canoe.

Last August I used this same canoe with a buddy to compete in the Missouri River 340 canoe race. It runs from Kansas City to St. Louis for you guessed it, 340 miles down the Missouri River. 58 hours and 33 minutes later we pulled into the finish, big time tired. We got maybe 4 hours of sleep over that time period. We placed 16th out of 117 in our division, men's tandem. We were pleased with the result having not practiced for more than 7 hours and never at night! If we do that again we definitley have some ideas on how to finish higher in the standings. Hardest thing that I have ever done.

I was toying with the idea of getting a kayak or canoe for down in FL. Then I saw a show this past weekend about alligators/crocs and one of them attacking a kayak. I no longer wish to have a kayak or canoe.

Racing is a different animal...anything race worthy is going to be expensive. But by the same token, racing hydroplanes is more expensive than racing cats or 18 footers. Engines are just going to cost more not only in initial payment but in maintaining them as well. You know that...or are you just baiting me?

I paddle with alligators a lot...Never at night mind you. Crocs?? We don't have any here, but I wouldn't paddle with them under any circumstances.

edited to add that there's also a lot of large pythons and even anacondas in the everglades due to idiots dumping their pets once they get too large. I'd be a lot more worried about one of them than a gator.

Canoe or kayak, something small paddle by hand

I'd start them out with a canoe. The only lessons they'll need will be swimming lessons. They're a little tippy so they'll have to get their sea legs. Once seated just take the paddle and go for it. They'll learn not to hit the side of the canoe with it, etc. as they practice. Warning...it's addictive. :D

Check into small SOT (Sit on top) kayaks. They are very stable and would be easier for kids to manage than a canoe IMO.

The one pictured in my original post is a 10' long model that you'd almost have to be trying to tip over.

Were doing swim classes new. Everytime we see one of those little boats they want one, every time we go in a sporting goods store they sit in the display models. I assume there is a proper way to launch/paddle/take care on one, age ranges, etc. Seems it was easier to start with bikes as there are LBS's that we went in and they answered all those questions, I haven' t yet found a local canoe/kayak shop yet.

Check with the YMCA and the Boy Scouts of America in your area.

I don't do anything like that as I get motion sickness pretty easily, but I knew a guy at the station that would (like all his yuppy friends) do what ever was the "in thing," he tried golf, smoking a pipe, and kayaking amongst other things, about two years later he ended up selling all the stuff he bought for half the price he paid for them. LOL! I would REALLY love to at least try kayaking, but I guess its just not in the cards. =0(

Have you tried motion sickness (accupressure) bracelets, for example (http://theoutdoorworld.com/products2.cfm?id=2423&zmam=53301494&zmas=1&zmac=2&zmap=2423#)?...a cheap drug-free solution. Only catch is that they have to stay in place.

We have two canoes, a 16" aluminum Sportspal and a We'no'na Spirit II, and two kayaks. a Necky Looksha 4 HV (for the big guy) and a Hurricane Aquasport (mine, easy for me to handle at 37 lbs), none of which have seen the water in a couple two three years because of time constraints - hubby was working most weekends in a lousy job. That's behind us now. Here's a shot of the kayaks pulled up on shore up on Long Pond outside of Jackman, Maine. Looking through those pictures - oh, boy, do we need to get back up there again. It's a nice camp called The Last Resort (http://www.lastresortmaine.com/), I highly recommend it to anyone who loves the north woods experience - cheap, no electricity, peace and nature - plus great hunting, if you're so inclined!

The Thule rack system we bought to transport either our canoes or our kayaks will hopefully be used to haul our bikes this year as well. Love to canoe camp or kayak the desolate lakes of Northern Maine. Before I die I'd love to canoe a week long trip in the BWCA. Like Ann said we've got to get back into paddling this year.

I have an early 1970's Metzeler 2 person folding kayak. It has a wood skeletal frame that you assemble inside of the fabric / rubber bottomed shell. Then it gets an inflatable bag put into both ends. It also came with a mast and sail, but was ridiculously unstable as a sail boat. I used to use it quite a bit when I lived in Saskatchewan, however our local rivers here are too shallow to consider kayaking on them with a fabric kayak. Now we just rent a canoe a few times every year. The Metzeler is just taking up space now, I think I'm going to have to get rid of it :( It holds a lot of great childhood memories.
