I've been wondering?

When you are simply riding - not racing, not a time-trial, or the like, just riding for fun, or with a few friends, how fast are you going?

Top speed on level ground, and/or average speed on level ground?

I simply want a yard-stick to measure by as I am getting going? Just trying to see at one point I won't have to worry bout being the boat-anchor!

And yes, there is always someone faster, my point, will there be someone slower??

Flat ground and mellow is nice once in awhile, more times than not I can't let a road like that go by without wasteing it but I'll play nice and not lie. No grade taking it nice in easy means arouund 13-15mp/h. I'm even being nive and converting it from my normal response of 22-25km/h.

My ride Saturday was 40 miles at 13.7mph...that's the longest and fastest I've gone. When I started last year, I was at around 8-10mph. I didn't start riding regularly until January/February of this year. What I'm finding is that as I've been riding consistently, each ride gets a little faster on average. I guess I will level out at some point but I'm too new to be there yet. Keep moving and you will be surprised at how quickly you improve!

My stop & go commute averaged 16.4 kph (10.2 mph) over the last 300 km (186 miles). Recreational riding on MUPs averages about 50% faster.

10-12. However, for various reasons I dismount more frequently than a 'real' cyclist does, so my miles covered in an hour tend to be slower than normal. On tour last year I logged 60 mile days in ten hours.

Peter, don't fall into the trap I did when I was a novice rider. Don't think you need to ride so fast in order to have people ride with you. You don't want to ride with people who think you are a boat anchor. Trust me. Anyone who is a faster or stronger rider who wants to ride with you will find a way to do it. Just concentrate on being a bike rider people want to ride with.

Depends upon whether we're in a serious mode or not. Often on a safe bike pathway, it's time for a social chat.. When we get in a more serious mode something like 15-18 mph for as long as 15 minutes or so. Average overall speed on club rides have gotten as high as about 17 when we put our minds to it.. I think speed is irrelevant anyway, when you accompany it with some serious climbing .

Too many variables to give you an absolute answer.

Around here there are only a few "flat" roads. On those I can average 17 mph without much strain. On hilly routes, I average 12-13. Maybe 14 on a good day, but it's been a while since I've had one of those...

10-12 solo or just out with the wife & or kids. 14-16 on the club rides.

With normal effort (nothing strenuous), my commute 7 mile commute has been taking about 30-35 minutes lately. Route is mostly flat, lots of MUP, although there are usually a couple traffic lights I have to stop at along the way for a couple minutes. So, I figure about 14 mph average actual riding speed.

Did a longer, 47 mile ride on Sunday morning. Average speed with a little more climbing, but still pretty flat = 14.2 mph.

On the flats on my heavy comfort bike just lolly-gagging along, 10-12 MPH, but I can average around 15 for around 1 hour if I push it. On the flats on my road bike (not really so light either) 14-16 MPH, but I can average around 18 for around 1 hour if I push it. But then again I am both over the hill and over the weight!

My average is 13-15 MPH. We'll see how that goes as I'm about to go out for the first time this year.

CliftonGK1

It all depends on terrain, road surface, riding partners and overall length of the ride.

Did a mild rolling 100k "social" ride with my rando club (experienced distance riders) on reasonably nice roads, and our paceline was holding 18mph average most of the way.

Last weekend was our spring 100k Populaire, we had many hills (4700' total) including a 1 mile section at 14% grade which tanked the overall average, but in the second (flatter) half I was rotating pulls with 2 fast riders at 20mph+ for the final 15 miles.

On a flat, solo 200k I might average 17mph. Throw some hills in there and I'm down to 14.5mph, which seems to be my "go all day" pace. When the distance goes over 200k, I'm usually not touching the turbo-boosters. I'm content to roll at a steady 14 - 15mph average on long rides if the roads don't suck too bad.

My point, It takes really intense cadence on the flats to equal the amount of work needed to attack a long 8% grade.

15-16 mph on average 20-mile ride, with a few little hills. On my Worksman cruiser, it was around 13-13.5 mph. I may be slower when riding with slower people or doing other stuff. On my last 200k, I averaged 15.0 mph. Fastest I've ever done on a closed loop was 17.0 mph. I managed an 18.3 mph 100k, but it was with a tailwind the whole way.

My average speed all up is around 22KM/H. Top speed along flat ground ~39KM/H. Mostly rolling at around 25KM/H with the hills pulling the average down a bit.

Great to see you setting a goal like this Peter!!! The data points of others can be fun to look at, but all that really matters is the one you set for yourself. My first goal when getting back on the bike a couple years ago was to complete the 17 mile MUP by my house without stopping to wheeze!:p

My ride this past Saturday was 42 miles, 1,700 ft of climbing (rolling hills), averaging 18.2 mph.

The goal for this summer is a lofty one - 1 hour 40k TT (a bit under 25mph).

I did a really easy flat ride today. By flat, I mean 267 feet gained over 32 miles. I'm also recovering from hernia surgery, 2 1/2 weeks out. I averaged 15.4mph. It was windy. The first half was into the wind, the 2nd half was with the wind.

That's what I call either foolishness, or faith in one's Bike!!

And to comment above - truthfully, 'Frank' is a gift to me! I can ride when I couldn't walk - so, even 2-5 MPH is a gift to me! But, as I also enjoy talking, and being with people I wish a goal that will allow me to also be an enjoyable riding partner to others. No matter how kind one is, if All I can manage is flats, and walking up hills, riding partners will become scarce I fear. So I wish not to be the fastest, nor to ever be a racer, but to be a steady rider - that indeed is my goal!

I dunno, looks like you've come along way already and I'm not the most gentle when I read "I want to" stories". I say quit wishing and go do it!:twitchy:

Your goals are more than in reach so quit thinking about it and get it done dammit!

This is one of our friends that used to ride with us a few years back. Dude was 5'6 and 270 lbs. The dude rode the wheels off of a ton of riders while riding the flat trails. We'd do 50 miles at 18 mph. He'd hang on my wheel as we blew by other skinny riders. I never asked him to take the front. I was happy that he could hang at a tough pace and really, the fun was passing other riders with a dude that wasn't supposed to keep up.

There are several riders that can make riding fun for you and bring out your best, just takes time to find them. But they are there!

Me? I was told I couldn't climb. I thought I was stuck in a mold cause others told me so, but woke up one day and asked myself, why not? Gina is far from a cycling chicks physique, she was a weekend "I Love Lucy" fan. BS! She's coming out with me cause there is something better for the both of us!

My friend Jack, short fat guy having the time of his life whooping on skinnies! You aren't far at all from his weight, he's 5'6, you may be taller?

Quit WISHING, get on your FFF.... FF....FF....Ffffffff, well get on your bike and ride. It's all there for you, go take it!

If you asked a rider to ride and help you ride more or better adn they don't, they weren't all that anyways!:notamused:

Our short fat buttkicker friend Jack! Good thing Homey aint in the area or Jack would have tore him a new one too!;)

My results may skew the rest here, since most seem to be on skinny tires.

I ride a Dakar XLT for everything.

Went out today for a fun/buildup ride; the loooong cold spell we just came out of (somebody called that winter) has been devastating to my fitness. Approx. 20 miles in 2 hours. (last year, did 32 in 10 minutes less time!)

My commute, whether the frigid-cold 2-miler, the 3-season 5-9 mile scenic route, or the old 9+ miler at my old location, always came in about 14mph.

Bah, Peter. I've been riding with Bautieri for nearly three years now. He can drop me in a heartbeat. He doesn't because, for some reason or another, he enjoys my company. Ditto zXhanz, except when I'm whining about how slow/bad I am when riding. Trust me, they don't ride with me because they are kind. Why not be the best rider you can be, and let the friendships fall where they may? Friends find ways to work around such things.

BTW, I deal with this all the time. There are people here on Bike Forums, including a moderator, who won't ride with me because they think I'm too fast. Somehow, they don't understand that I'm not a mile per hour number, I'm Neil.
