Training & Nutrition - Lactic acid not the culprit?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I heard an npr news story today about how lactic acid is actually not the culprit that causes your muscles to stop working, but may actually be the body's way of helping. I'm an avid rider, but no racer or anything, so it really doesn't mean squat and won't affect my workouts or diet, but it's still interesting. Here's a couple links.

Hrm, npr appears to have yanked the story.

I never thought of latic acid as a bad thing. It hurts like hell but doesn't it take the place of oxygen when your lungs cant processes it as fast as your working? I'm pretty sure thats how it works, but then again I'm not a coach or anything. Maybe Koffee or Ric will chime in.
Thanks for the info.

hmmm
Lactic acid injections anyone?
:)
From the seminars I've attened, they've been saying that lactic acid is a good thing- that the excess lactic acid that builds up from exercise is actually used to enter the Krebs Cycle to produce more ATP to do more work.
This doesn't mean that you should go as hard as you can every single time- there still is a method to the madness to get optimum benefits of lactic acid buildup.

not sure if you've seen it or not koffee, but here's a krebs cycle link

and here too! http://www.jonmaber.demon.co.uk/tcasteps/
I've seen it.
But the presence of oxygen and lactate forms pyruvate, correct? And the pyruvate enters the Krebs cycle, which is what I was asserting earlier.

Thanks, but I've got books and lecture notes, circa 2003.

It still irks me when I read current articles that suggest that lactic acid production is the main cause of DOMS (delayed onest muscle soreness).
well read 'em then ;-)
Already have, but thanks for the old school links. ;)

Apparently the result of very recent research involving single strands of frog muscles. My take is that it is good raw data, but it'll still be a while 'til it yields useful training information. Actually, there was one thing... they mentioned that since lactic acid slows the potassium depletion (and thus muscle fatigue), taking bicarbonate as a training aid to help neutralize the lactic acid (there was a thread on this a couple months ago) might be counter-productive.

Here is another great article ... http://www.nynewsday.com/news/health/ny-hsmouse0824,0,7562101,print.story?coll=ny-
From article:
California scientists have genetically engineered an animal that has more muscle, less fat and more physical endurance than their littermates. The mice go twice as far as expected. They also seem protected against the inevitable weight gain that follows a high fat, high calorie diet.
Good God, sign me up as a human test subject!!

Whoa! I wasn't implying THAT! I was implying that being up all the time may be annoying to the sig. other... with you online all night, I'm sure there'd be some suspicion ("honey, who are you talking to all night online" *in falsetto, annoying voice*).
Don't you worry- I'm not interested. ;) :D
