base model, this is what i'm seeing:
zune:
double storage of ipod (8 vs 16 gig)
hd radio
ipod:
more apps available
my wife has a touch and she loves it. i would like to stray away from apple and get something different, but i dont want an inherently inferior product. i would like something with wifi capability and a solid mp3 player. both of these meet the bill and are the exact same price.
thoughts?

absolutely not. i know you're an apple believer, but what exactly would you say puts the touch over the zune HD?

Everything I've ever owned from Microsoft ultimately sucked.

I hate Apple. But, if your wife is already using the apple platform, I would stick with it. I love my iphone, and have liked ipods in the past. I stick with it cuz my library and apps are all on the apple platform. It hurts but it works. If you don't care about sharing your wife's music (and possibly paying for songs/movies/apps twice, then do what you want. At this point I am too far gone to make the switch.

that's the topic of endless debate of course, but has not been my experience at all. the real drawback to the zune that i see is the lack of support, apps, hardware, etc. and i'm not sure how much i care about that stuff anyway.
i'm travelling for work in a week and i will have this thing by then. i was smart enough to throw my old reliable mp3 player in the washing machine (jersey pocket). fortunately it was a cheapie one, but worked well.

I still use an old behemoth creative labs nomad. It has an actual laptop hard drive inside of it (30G in size). Its huge, noisy and vibrates when I turn it on. Terrible battery life. No color screen. The backlight stopped working. It is the bets MP3 player I've ever had.
Screw iPods or Zunes.

Given that comparison, it looks like a slam dunk for the touch. My sis 'n law loves hers. I recently got the 5th gen ipod but could see getting a touch somewhere down the line.

It's a no-brainer for the iPod Touch if you want more than a music player. If you need it to be a video gaming system, email center, etc. then the Touch is a more functional device due to the sheer number of available applications. But, let's be realistic about those 75,000 apps: There's a lot of useless crap fluffing up that number. However, there are still far more useful apps than the Zune HD has available.
That said, I like my Zune HD and the Zune software interface. I dig the Smart DJ feature and the categorized content of the "Related Music" panel, which gives not only bands similar to the one you're listening to, but also musical influences of the currently playing band. The Marketplace auto-picks based off the ratings you've given songs in your collection haven't steered me toward many things I just flat-out hate, although some choices certainly aren't in my top rotation.
I'm not sure how anything outside of the iTunes purchase system works, but I dig the ZunePass model: $15.00/month and I can download all the music I want onto my player. I get 10 song credits for purchase, but the other downloaded content is temporary and will expire. When a song expires, it's just removed from the player during my next sync (and listed in the "recently removed" tab). I've had some music for over 3 months without expiration, so I'm not sure what the lifespan is. I get bored with it and download new stuff before that happens.
There is now a Facebook app for the Zune HD, if that matters.
My fiancee has some beta apps (works for Microsoft) and we've tested some full length movie playback via the HD Dock, and it's pretty nice. Well, as nice as 720p can look, which is the big constraint with the player.
I wouldn't mind if Microsoft put a "patterns" feature similar to Windows Media Player for HD video output while using the device as a music player docked to a TV. The standard 'album art with scrolling crazy title bars' is hokey, and looks for crap if you're using the player as background noise for a party.

I really am getting a kick out of all the iPad doomsayers. Don't worry, they'll sell at least 5 million of them this year. Some industry insiders think it could be double that.

if you were referring to my comment, the ipad simply doesnt fit any need that i have, period. that said, i think its a great idea that will fill a niche market, no doomsaying here, i can see apple's writing on the wall as clear as anyone.

I was referring to the idiots who are predicting this product will fail because they have some axe to grind (that's most of it). I'm sure many people have no use for this product. Or they think that. Of course this is the kind of product that starts to dawn on people once it is on the marketplace and they get a chance to understand its capabilities. You know, like the iPod. Like the iPhone. Like computers with a GUI (the first of which was a Mac).
Regardless, Apple doesn't need 50 million people (globally) to want one, they only need 5 million. I don't think that's going to be that hard for them if this gizmo remotely resembles what I've seen on video. All the iPhone owners tell me they love the product, the iPad is bigger and has more sophisticated touchscreen. I'll be very surprised if it's not a big hit.

Coming from a Microsoft guy, it's probably odd to hear it; but if you've already got everything set up for iTunes, etc. since your wife uses it, it's easiest to stick with what you've got.
As a testament to the durability of the iPod Nano, here's my story:
2 winters ago we had a huge storm. Roads were closed, there was 2' of snow on the streets, trees were falling over, etc. Typical for this area when there's a storm. I went to check on a friend's house, and my Nano fell out of my pocket without me realizing it until I got home.
Months later my friend brings me my Nano. There's dirt caked in the headphone jack and interface port. It sat in a snowbank and ended up getting found in a flowerbed in the spring.
I cleaned the dirt out of the plugs, charged it up, and it still works! Better than that; it still had all my music on it!

My friend was telling me about an app for her isomething that if you are shopping, see a product that you like, you can scan the item like they do at the checkout, and up will come the place that you can buy that product for a lower price within a certain mile radius. I thought that was pretty cool.

I think there's a similar program for the Droid. I haven't bothered looking one up for my WinMo based phone. I don't think I'd use it very much. For expensive purchases, I've usually researched prices online before going to a store. For small purchases, I don't care if I can save $1.00 by going to a different store; I'll save myself the time by purchasing it in the store where I'm already shopping.

Honestly, it's not a bad thing. It's a bit pricier, but the aesthetics and UI are just top notch. I honestly can't fathom going back to Windows. That said, my phone isn't Apple (Blackberry) and the rare times I use an MP3 player it's a Creative Zen.

You can activate 2 (or more) screen areas at once. Most touch screen devices only recognize activation of one screen area at a time.
The practical application demo I'd seen for this was a game with onscreen controllers in both corners, similar to a Playstation or Xbox twin-stick controller.

The iPhone OS already multitasks; you just can't see it.
http://www.roughlydrafted.com/2010/02/17/ten-myths-of-apple’s-ipad-9-it-cant-multitask/
One of my friends at work, who's the most fanboy-ish Mac nerd I know (and he got his first one only four years ago), said to me that he hopes the iPad will multitask. I said, "Why? So you can have an application running in the background where you can't see it, eating up CPU cycles and battery power even though you can't interact with it at all? Any iPhone/iPad app worth its salt saves its current state anyway, so when you return to it, you pick up right where you left off."
I'm not saying that I don't think it'll ever happen, but that I think multiple-apps-displaying-onscreen-at-once is far less necessary than anyone is willing to acknowledge.
