I have a 2000 Specialized Stumpjumper M2 Pro that I beat the snot out of over the years. Since I don't mountain bike anymore but would still like something more versatile than my roadie, I was thinking of trading it in for a Trek 7.1 FX. This would be for bike paths/rail trails with the wife and tooling around town. Hybridizing my Stumpjumper isn't a big deal, but it's pretty worn and the geometry of the frame is for racing and is a bit too aggressive for me now. I would need new tires, plaform/SPD combo pedals, and a new seat. This doesn't include anything else that may be toast that I haven't noticed yet. I also think the wheels are pretty worn as I got them used and put a lot of trail miles on them. I have no idea what I would get for a trade-in, but if it's less than $200, I would probably just keep it and hybridize it. Should I bother attempting the trade-in? Is the 7.1 a good choice?

My advice would be: yes, keep the bike and turn it into a very cool hybrid-all-around-fun-bike.

I converted my '99 Specialized Hardrock and have never regretted it. I have a few bikes, but it is
one of my favorite for long, somewhat slower rides.

If you do convert, I bet you will find you will be riding it all the time for just about any and all of your
rides.

Thanks for your input. I guess I'm just reluctant to dump more money into this bike It's cost me a fortune over the years; hardcore racing bikes are more about speed than durability. I've decided that if the difference between the trade-in value and the price of a new bike is more than $230, I'll go with your suggestion.

Hello, I would say to convert your Mtn. Bike over and have some real fun with it. I am doing the same thing to my Marin Mtn. Bike and just having a blast eating up roadies that try to overtake me. Have fun and best of luck with your project.... here are some of the things I have changed on mine...

2)Custom Seat
3)Cut Seat Post
4)Cut Bars
5)1.5 Racing Slicks
