Mountain Biking - How do you handle this?

Do most of you guys have a bike which you just ride on the road, or do you ride your 5 grand monstrocities on the road and lock it up with kryptonite or something? I might get a shred so I want to know if it's worth saving up for a street bike.

i ride my fluid everywhere. i've got it built up more for freeride than for xc. i just got a new wheelset (singletrack/xt) which are a bit heavier than the original wheels that came with the bike. i've also got fatter tires (2.3 - nothing huge). i've also got an oversized dh stem (40mm) and oversized bar. i also usually always keep my seat low, only raising it up once in a bluemoon.

i've got a kryptonite lock, but i don't really use it much. when i ride to work, i usually stash my bike in a back room or leave it in my office or something.

I use it pretty much everywhere. and how dare you call my bike a $5,000 monstosity.;):D

I ride my $1500 BICYCLE everywhere. I, unlike Mael and some other members, have ONE bike.

depends on the neighbourhood i'm in, also depends on how long i have to leave it out there. if i'm just going into the 7/11 to pick up a drink or a bag of chips or something i don't lock it up. just go, run in and run out. if i'm gonna be leaving the bike out for a while, i'll lock it up and either take my seat and front wheel with me, or just the seat.

Well its kind of different in my town. I live in a town of 10,000 people at the most. I usually just put my bike on the bike rack. If i'm going to be gone more then 10 minutes I will lock it up. But its tough for someone to steal my bike. The LBS isn't very busy so he's usualy sitting outside and if he sees someone that isn't me walking wiht my bike. He'll know somethings up. Plus if someone were to steal my bike. It's a small town and everyone knows everyone. It wouldn't get far before someone saw my bike and contacted me.

I never leave it out. I live in a town of 10,000 but lots of bike thieving tourists. My bike comes in my office and my house. If I go elsewhere someone always stays with the bikes

Yeah I have one. It says Trek Dreadlocks. But under it says By: Kryptonite.

And yes, It would be easy to take off a quick release rear wheel without tools. I can take it off in a matter of seconds. There simple. I can get my QR-20's off in about 30 to 45 seconds.(Front)

Aw crap. I dont want to lock my bike for like 2 hours only to find it's front wheel, has been stolen ( if I locked lock wit back wheel/frame) or back wheel stolen (if I locked front wheel w/ frame). I dont think that quik releases are good in the city are they?

Toronto is arguably the bike theft capitol of the world, at one point, 14,000 bicycles/yr were stolen on U of T campus alone. I've had six bikes stolen. Police are useless. Need someone to eat a donut, call a cop, otherwise...

I tried expensive bike locks- no good, and guess what? that Kryptonite warranty is all BS. It's even excluded from Toronto, as is all insurance.

I tried daily riding on a crap $40 bike, it was stolen overnight while locked to a wood fence, they actually cut down the fence to steal it.

My last two bikes were stolen in front of a security station on campus, one was stolen on video, the cop's response: "oh that guy again".

In 2000, the Toronto police ran a sting operation by leaving a bike against a wall in Cabbagetown -they got 23 people in two hours. they had to stop the sting operation due to the paperwork.

To ride in T.O., you need to put silicone glue in all the allen bolt heads of your bike, weld parts to the frame or the parts will be stolen. Front wheels have to be removed and locked to the frame, at least two locks are required, cable locks. U-locks have been broken with liquid nitrogen and a hammer, or pryed with a car jack. Often, frames can be seen tied to poles, bike stands, stripped completely. There are shops that sell these bikes and parts, no one cares.

Now I ride to work and put the bike in my office. My boss did this in 1994, someone came into his office and stole his bike. He bought another, except he now locked the bike to his desk leg. One week later, at 11 am, someone came into his office, sawed off the leg and took the new bike. A week after that, a truck stopped in front of the medical school at U of T and three men dislodged the entire bike stand and stole ~80 bikes at once into the truck, still locked to the stand. U of T's crack security police was foiled again by this devious plan of geniuses.

In 1993, there was a police report in the Toronto Star of a man found in High park at 5am tied to a tree , with bike tools, his pants down and frame pump up his rectum. He said he was jumped and mugged, but he still had his wallet. The police concluded he was a bike thief caught by the wrong victim. I say this is just about the right punishment, except I would have used a cassette wrench.

This is in contrast to North Carolina, where I could leave a bike unlocked anywhere. No one cared, few people even rode bikes, too much effort.

In a Willliam Gibson novel, he wrote of a bike anti-theft device that was a large capacitor charged by riding, set as a booby trap to zap a thief-he said he got this idea while in Toronto.

You could easily steal bikes all day and never get caught. Steal one car and the T.O. police will chase you down on a crowded street, endanger public, and likely shoot you dead.

ok here's a suggestion for you guys:

lock your bike and stake out at a hidden position and wait for someone to go steal it, but once you catch the guy in the act, do't call the police, just go right up to him and beat the crap out of him.

Do this every single day.

Secondly, Gecko, I'm a thirteen year old kid. What am I supposed to get out? My golf knife? Butchers knife? Tennis racket? squash racket? I don't want to beat the crap out of them but I do want those idiots to leave town for good. This has just complicated my buying process by like 600%. :@

Actually, Mael has never had more then 1 3/4 bikes. One works and the other is always apart. When he gets another he will still only have 1 3/4 bikes because the other two will be apart to keep his main bike rolling. :p


If some one wants to rip your bike bad enough no lock is going to work. Your best bet is always lock it and in a populated area and never leave it very long. Never lock it in the same place every time. Use a cable lock that you can run through both wheels and the frame or use bolt through axles. Locks work as a slight deterent but by no means will you be assured of having your bike when you get back to it.

A lot of thives will also just take the seat and post if they can not get the bike. As I said, if they want it they can get it. It is a risk you take when using your bike to get around on.

I am good at saving money and I am really good at finding cheap or used parts. I am definately not rich ;)...I also don't drive which saves TONNES of money. These bikes are my fun, commute and more fun ;)

im gunna have to buy a car because i live a 20 min drive outside of winnipeg and to go every day on bike is possible but ide have to wake up super early o make my job so mybe I will move to the city...that would be cool..then i would bike every where...the more I think about it, it would probbally be faster to bike around the city then drive around the city because you barelly every stop like cars at red lights and what not.

I had a motorcycle stolen in 1992. The T.O. police spotted the bike on Spadina and ran the plates to realize it was stolen. The rider attempted to take off, but the police car rammed him off the bike at 50km/hr, they almost killed him, he spent months in a hospital, they destroyed my bike. They were very proud they apprehended this menace to society. I was the victim of the theft, but no one deserved what those cops did to that poor guy.

Try getting a MTB bike that looks like a police bike. You know, like the ones those fat guys are waddling down Yonge street on after they take the subway uptown. Metro's finest.
