Is a Shimano flat-bar front mech FD-R453 compatible with Shimano Tiagra ST-4500 (triple) shifters?

On a related question, what is the difference between the flat-bar FD-R453 and road bike FD-4503?

I'm guessing the shifter will work with that derailleur...

As for the difference with the derailleur, NFI. Prolly not a lot. Maybe it's for a compact crankset?

the rear shifters are cross-compatible with anything Shimano (except 8-speed and prior Dura-Ace). for the front derailers/shifters, Shimano has a bunch of diff standards.
I'm not sure if Shimano's flat-bar road shifters have the same cable-pull ratio for front derailer as mountain bike groups or road-bike groups.

I'm not sure if Shimano's flat-bar road shifters have the same cable-pull ratio for front derailer as mountain bike groups or road-bike groups.

Someone around here (Jeff something I think) claims that the flat bar road shifters use the same front derailler pull ratio as the MTB groups. I've never tried it myself but it makes sense. Why reinvent the shifter when you can just change the front derailler to work with larger chainrings?

The FD-R453 is compatible only with Shimano flat bar shifters, whether marketed as "flat bar road" or "mountain" the cable pull is the same, and is incompatible with normal road front derailleurs.

For your Tiagra STI shifters, you'll need to use the FD-4503, which is a normal road front derailleur, designed to be used with road shifters. Any other Shimano road triple front derailleur would work as well (Sora, 105, etc.)

I'm looking at putting a flat-bar setup on my girlfriends bike. The front derailleur is a Tiagra FD-4503. Rear derailleur is 105 9-speed RD-5600. I'm looking at SL-R440 or SL-R660 for shifters.

I've read these shifters are compatible with the rear mech, but do I have to replace the front mech with a FD-R453?

Yes, you'll have to replace the front mech to use flat-bar trigger shifters. Or, use some shifters with a non-indexed front shifter - some old thumb shifters and some grip shifts fit this criteria - you could then use any front derailleur.

I put mine on the seat tube. How does your bike shift with it on the down tube?
