Foo - Relief from Hay Fever
Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Unfortunately as I get older, my hay fever each year gets worse. It's generally starts right about now (and has with a vengence) and continues through summer, even until Fall. Only dry cold weather brings relief.
I have allergies for other things, but I can generally control those problems by just avoiding the product (some foods) and situation (cat dander, dust etc). Tree and grass pollens throw me for a loop. Many years ago there was a great product called Drioxal which actually helped. That product has since been taken off the market. I've tried other OTC and prescription drugs with little relief. Right now I stick with the old standby Benadryl but that makes me "loopy" during the day.
Do you of you also have this problem? Have you been able to beat it or make it better? What products do you use? I feel bad all spring and summer - it keeps me from cycling and working out cause I am unable to breathe. Plus snot everywhere - not good!

Generic Claritin (loratadine) - available at any grocery/drug store. Just picked up 60 tab pack at Rite Aid (store brand) for $14.99 - and these are 24 hour pills. Non-drowsy, and I'm a person who used to walk around with a box of tissues. If you have a Sam's or Costco membership, they probably will have this stuff cheaper. This works GREAT for me - takes care of the sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes, and hives.

i used to have it bad. so bad that my eyes would swell shut and i would have difficulty breathing. in such extreme reactions, you can get eye drops and nasal sprays and they are very effective and fast acting.

I noticed that my allergies began when I was in my early 20's, right after my oldest was born and I started to gain lbs, after just a few years of suffering I thought why not loose lbs? so I started working out and lost 50 lbs and guess what? the allergies are gone and never returned! Coinky dink? Maybe, maybe not, all I know is it worked for me as I've been allergy free for like 20+ years! =0)

I have the same issue and nothing works for me. Benadryl makes me cry. Everything else might as well be speed because I get jacked up in a n unpleasant way. I've been using a Neti pot from NeilMed and it helps some and cuts down on the severity of my headaches. I also use Mentholatum to help with the respiratory pain.

I have allergies so bad...allergic to grass, trees, pollen, my cats and dogs, dust. I was prescribed an inhaler, pills, nasal spray, eye drops and I get shots every other week. On top of that I have asthma.
I now use a neti pot (http://www.webmd.com/allergies/sinus-pain-pressure-9/neti-pots) (avail at Walgreens or CVS, about $15), so I no longer have the need for nasal sprays. It washes out the pollen and the yuckies from your sinuses/nosal passages. If there is nothing to irritate you there, then no facial pressure or sneezing, right? And because you are clean in your sinuses because of this, it helps with the eye irritation too...well at least for me it does. So I no longer use eye drops now!
There's a wealth of info on this and if you go to youtube there's a vid (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j8sDIbRAXlg)showing how it's done. Don't be afraid, you won't drown. I've told several people about this and they love it.
Oh! And it's good when you have a cold, too. Clears you up and helps the cold go away faster. After all, if you wash out the bad bugs in there, they can't multiply. :)
