I was given a diamondback ascent ex by my friend who had lost interest in it. before he lost intrest he had ripped it apart so that everything except the crank was removed. I got mostly everything together but the cassette just freespins both ways. I'm an amateur so I don't know what to do..... I would love to fix it myself and not spend money

Thanks

sounds like a freehub problem and not a problem with the cassette. try tightening the freehub.

Must be freehub by the sound of it and sounds as though the pawls are not engaging. Could just be rust so try to get some "Light" engineering oil inside it. (Cover it in WD40 and try to get a lot inside if possible.)

If that doesn't work- get to an LBS and get them to fit a new one. They are not expensive- but get them to check the wheel at the same time.

I say could be rust but rust normally stiffens the freehub or body up. But I have some "Mavic" wheels that the freehub has to have the pawls replaced every year or so. If I don't they seize up on the first wet ride of the year. But they seize open and not engaging.

The title of this thread contradicts itself.
