Ok I have conceeded on my utility bike in that it will be a maximum load including me of 400 lbs. Do I have to look at getting a special BB and crank or will anything do at that level?

I was planning to get a Shimano ES-51 BB or Shimano UN54 for instance

Should be fine. Same parts are used in tandems and those can be well over 600 lbs including touring loads. Watch out for 2009-2010 Ultregra chains... I read somewhere that they are having failures due to improper tempering.
