Its a new derailleur. I think its supposed to be 8/9 speed compatible. Would it shift ok with 7 speed drive train? or is the difference in chain width too great?

It will work. Pull ratio is the same for all Shimano rear derailleurs except for 8-speed Dura-Ace. I use a 10-speed rated 105 with a 7-speed RSX shifter that works flawlessly.
