Over the past couple of years I have been on a de-clutter mission and it feels good to get rid of stuff. So far, I have gotten rid of excess power tools, wine collection, watch collection, a car and a pen collection. The most enjoyment has come from giving items to people that appreciate it. Selling was ok, but not rewarding.

So, do you prefer to give or sell?

How do you collect wine? I can see storing some bottles for a while but that stuff will be consumed in my household.

I guess I just don't "collect" things. I have a bunch of old coins that have been passed down from several sides of the family but it's not like I studied coins and went after these for the perceived value. I like to look at them every so often and I am planning on passing them to my son more like old family photos.

I've got a lot of books but I read a lot and my wife and I came from families that liked books so we ended up with a lot of nice books. Every time we move the pile gets sorted through and some are given away but most get a new shelf. Some get re-read.

I'll probably be the last person to get a iPad or a Kindle because I love the act of turning pages and the feel of a book but I love digital music. I do still have a few boxes of vinyl and CDs (got rid of all the tape years ago) but having a ridiculous amount of music collected in a palm sized device is a real luxury. I am a little greedy with this and it may be because I can cram so much in a small space.

I thought this was a thread about bulimia in cycling.

Imagine my profound disappointment.

20 years of purchasing at a higher rate than consumption. :)

Yes, when my 3rd table saw had to be moved into my bike room, something had to go. Same with routers/tables and old planer, and band saw. I gave away all my old Craftsman stuff when I was given the contents of an industrial woodworking shop.

I've found that for CraigsListing stuff I really don't want anymore, I need to advertise it with at least a small price just to get people to show up.
Many things I've sold, especially bike related, were sent away for almost nothing.
I'm happiest when I believe the items will actually be used/installed/ridden, rather than just cluttering up someone else's workshop.

Generally I have found this is best. Often people don't appreciate something for free.

Joshua Bell gave a free concert in the Washington, D.C. metro station and very few people even stopped to listen. A few days earlier he played to a sold out house where tickets went for $100+ a seat.

I love the tools that were gifted to me by my father in law. I think of him everytime I go out to my workbench. Hopefully the people that you have gifted will think as well of you.

Not with my LBS owner or Dentist. They were the main recipients.

Tannins don't like me and many wines aren't meant to age in bottles so away they went.

I did mostly give to the salvation army and the rest was pawed thru by the neighbors as we had such a short time to move and didn't have time for a garage sale, etc -- as the house was sold with a nice "carrot" hanging in front of it - $5,000 over our asking price if we out in 30 days (dear lord - when you've lived in a big house with an attic you could play basketball and and a full basement - it provides places to store stuff - and accumulate stuff - we did!) - needless to say that time was sheer hell trying to find a place to store our belongings, get rid of stuff, pack stuff. Oh man, never again!!!

I've been getting rid of stuff for the last several years and really did the BIG purge when I moved into my own place last year.

Maybe you should have just found the Anti Christ and had him turn your wine into water.

Yikes! As someone who nearly removed a thumb with a skill saw, I can't believe the people standing so close to the track. I wonder how many parties would be sued if they got hit?

We sort of do...I mean we collect a bunch of junk we arn't going to use and put it in a garage sale pile to clear it out. We don't do a spring cleaning like the frikkin Waltons or anything but yeah...we clear out and clean up each room. Mrs. Cloud and I split the money from the sale to blow on whatever we want. Bike stuff for me and usually clothes for her. We donate what doesn't sell.

I have a friend with four table saws in his shop. A left and right tilt built into a ten by ten center work table, the third is a dedicated dado set-up and the fourth is his little portable saw to take to worksites.
