Ahhhh. Back in good ol' Blacksburg, Va. I've been looking foward to this for months. Finally back where I can train in the hills. Suffering! Pain! Gravity!
After being back in flat Prince George for so long, I'd forgotten what a hill looks like. The "Wall" back there was a 400 yard 7.5% grade bump. Here's it's just leg-scorching mountain after leg-scorching mountain.
I'm rather pleased about my condition, however. Last fall before I left I had the Fuji with a triple and a 13-26 in the rear (7 speed). I was pretty much in the granny ring for all the hills. Now, with my Cannondale (pronounced Kahn-ahn-dahl-lay. It sounds more elegant.), I can keep in in the 39/23 the whole way up. Granted, it's at about 70 RPM, but it works!
No point to this, I guess, but I had to tell somebody.

Congratulations! your one of the Big Dogs now! I keep saying, if a 39/27 combo can't get it, don't blame the bike. This is a rather peevish topic around here; now I'm treading on thin ice for sure.

Have you tried the back side of mountain lake route yet? Thats the jewel of the area. Also I drove to a friends house yesterday in Preston Forest. This hill is off of rt460 and coal bank hollow. It goes up Brush Mountain. The roads were a bit wet and my car was skidding out going up it!!! I ride a 12-27 and use every bit of it...
Sounds like you are getting ready the '05 Mountains of Misery ride.
www.wildernessroadride.com that ends up on Rt 460.

No, actually, I haven't tried that. I was looking on VT cycling team's site for routes, and they look pretty good, but I wonder if they might not be a tad long for me. I'm not positive I could do more than 20-30 miles in these hills. Where's that Mountain Lake one you mentioned? Holy Cow. I just looked at that MoM ride that sch posted. It mentions the Mountain Lake hill. 5k Cat 1 over 10% grade?!?!
I'm thinking I may get a 12-27 soon. I'm afraid of injuring myself mashing the 23 so much.
Do you know of any slow group rides around here?
